Minecraft server?

I was thinking of building a dedicated server for a small youtube channel who has some community game nights. At game nights they id say between 60-100 players. What parts would i need for this build? CPU? how much ram? Power efficient parts would be a must since it will run 24/7

The big question here above all else is what is the upload speed of your internet connection? That will be the determining factor above all else as far as the community size you can support.

minecraft severs are single threaded and they barely leverage cores above a dual core. 

It also depends what are you running, vanilla? Modded? Vanilla with some plugins? 
I would say for vanilla you would have about 150mb used per player on the map, if they're not overlapping. If modded, I would say around 300 or so. Same thing goes for vanilla with some plugins, that may be around 175 or so.

Also, each plugin uses like 20mb ram more.

(all of this is if i recall correctly.)

it would also be better if you're running off of a cheap ssd for the random read/write, however a hdd is usually plenty. i would only go for the ssd if it was on a map with a huge map to load.

With 100 people you will be better off renting a server, you will have huge issues with network upload speeds on a residential internet connection.

I've got pretty meh internet with at&t, but am switching to gigabit fiber.

Maybe ask forums of big Minecraft servers, like Mineplex, they could probably tell you. You could also just pay on some website so they run the server for you and you pay.

Im upgrading to a fiber connection with gigabit down and 100Mbps, is that sufficent?

The Mineplex community is full of 10 year olds who don't even know how a server is made.

If there are always people on it ISPs usually don't like people running servers on residential plans so they will probably force you to switch to business or cut you off.

It also depends what are you running, vanilla? Modded? Vanilla with some plugins? 
I would say for vanilla you would have about 150mb used per player on the map, if they're not overlapping. If modded, I would say around 300 or so. Same thing goes for vanilla with some plugins, that may be around 175 or so.

Also, each plugin uses like 20mb ram more.

(all of this is if i recall correctly.)

it would also be better if you're running off of a cheap ssd for the random read/write, however a hdd is usually plenty. i would only go for the ssd if it was on a map with a huge map to load.

So do you think it would be better to go with a dual core i3, or something from AMD?

i have space engineers on AMD and thats single threaded as well. Its dual threaded but the physics is done on one core, events and scripts on the other. I overclocked it as far as i could and disabled power saving and was better than hosting and playing from my i7-3770k.

 

With block based games you cannot host them on a virtual PC because they need the memory bandwidth which is why its actually a bad idea to host a popular minecraft server on some rental server provider unless you are renting the physical machine. Your ram needs will depend on the size of the world. The bigger the world the more ram you will need. The more active players you have the more CPU you will need and even though minecraft may be single threaded, the OS's networking will work on a different thread so you can still benefit from dual cores or quad cores.

 

On my space engineers server just starting the game from scratch for a space of many planets, moons, asteroids it already takes 6GB of ram but my server already has 32GB of ram. Give it as much RAM, CPU and memory bandwidth you can that means dont use virtualisation. Minecraft by itself doesnt use much ram as thats dependent on world size and CPU and RAM speed effects how much activity can go on.

 

So any CPU from intel or AMD will work as long as you can run them at as high clocks as possible and stuff as much ram and ram speed you can. CPU cache is also helpful so the more CPU cache the better.
