I wouldn't make another hop just for your lab.  I say just throw a switch in there and call it a day.  I think it'd be a little ridiculous to subnet a separate network in your house.

I would rather not mess up my home network instead of have a hole separate network for my servers.

I just don't understand your reasoning.  Have you done any research on network setups?

you could grab an old cisco layer 3 switch off craigslist or something and have them on separate vlans then.  Doesn't make sense to have another router in your setup.

I get what your trying to achieve.

Having on a different network (known as a subnet) bellow your home one.

For example on how to set it up you would have your home networking (call the home router router0 and the lab one router1) like normal (e.g. 192.168.0.x/24)

Then connect router0 LAN port to router1 WAN port.

On router1 you would have it configured on a different subnet e.g. 192.168.1.x/24

There is a lot more as well but i think these video i watched a while back explain it.

For stuff on networking i found this very good (i have watch most of it)

Thank you.

What budge and does it only need to be a router (e.g. not AP built in)

I was thinking this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cisco-1800-Series-341-0135-03-Network-Router-S945534-/381702217690?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368#viTabs_0
