Hello everybody,

I recently work at a new place as graphic designer and my boss is a really nice guy (lucky me).

He asked me if I could build a system that could be a powerhouse and could work under alott of pressure and still work smoothly (using adobe Photoshop, After Effects and Final Cut Pro ect ect and also having other programms in the background).

I know my stuff about computer building (build my own PC) but I do not know every thing about every component in detail, still enough room to increase my knowledge.

Normally how things would go for my boss is he would just buy a new iMac 27 inch for around around 1800-2100 euro (we live in the Netherlands)

The specs on that are ussualy a intel core i5 CPU around 3.0 GHz with 16GB 1600MHz  RAM and the GPU most of the time is a NVIDIA Geforce with 1GB.

I was wondering if the more experience people could help me advise on what components I should focus on a build like this.

For abit cheaper price as a iMac 27 inch I want to build a powerhouse system for editing and the use of visual programms.

So any experience people on this subject that can push me in the right direction :) ?

Greets,

Javier Catalan

The Netherlands

for a workstation build you should get a lga2011 platform (x79) with a 4930k. Also make sure to get enough ram (at least 16GB preferably 32GB). If you wanna go the cheaper route then get a FM3+ Platform with a FX-8350.

Edit: might not be necessary to get a workstation GPU - a decent consumer grade GPU should be just fine.

I'd get something like this

This is under $2000 so with taxes and everything else, you'll stay under 2000 euros

If you want, get a ATX motherboard and/or a lga2011 cpu

AMD Athlon X4 750k; Gigabyte F2A88XM-DS2; 8Gb Corsair XMS 1600 Mhz; AMD Hd5670 1Gb DDR3; Bequiet E6-600W; W7 Ultimate x64

pretty much this... maybe just get the P9X79 (non WS) and the fractal define R4 case to save a couple of bucks. The GTX 780 might also be a bit overkill for a strictly editing/rendering rig.

We need more info for this type of build. Is your boss going to edit a lot of things, does he need a lot of hard disk space, does the computer need to be highly transportable, does he want the best possible performance?

In that case just go for 4770k, gtx 670 which is very cool, highly overclockable card that has a lot of cuda performance, and atleast 24 gigs of ram because something like photoshop and premiere and aftereffects/final cut pro will take about 20 gigs of ram, i recommend to fill all your slots on 1150 mobo and go for 32 gigs of ram, as far as storage goes i cannot tell how much does your boss need, but i will make a nice computer in pc part picker for cheap so you can consider it :P

To explain, 4770k is probably best CPU for everything, every other cpu is 300 dollars more expensive and it gives 5 percent performance boost or not at all, and not to mention this cpu has probably best single core performance.

Be quiet dark rock is dual tower heatsink cooler that you can point at rear exhaust of the pc case you can see up there for best cooling performance, that means you will easily be able to also overclock the cpu for maximum potential performance :D 4.5 - 4.7 ghz is a very good clock the cpu can bust.

Nothing to say about Gigabyte motherboards, they are most reliable motherboard you can get on the market and has some retarded overclocking potential.

You need 32 gigs of ram because 3 editing programs at once can eat about 20 gigs of ram, and if you add photoshop maybe even 24 and arround 2 gigs will be needed for your system, that is a good pick :D.

You never can go wrong with cruical's. Those are best SSD's, they have some sick read and write performance and you've got 256 gigs there, you will be able to read some blazing fast porn.

You've got two 3tb hdd's, one for porn... i mean editing stuff and other for backups and you can use ssd for a blazing fast scratch disk, if you want, you don't need the extra hdd, but you can add it if you want, and you will never even need it since you have so much RAM in handy :P.

GTX 670 is officially supported card for minecraft... I mean adobe products and it is the most overclockable one and the fastest of those that are supported, wicked performance right there my friend.

Cooler master scout II is a highly transportable case that you must have assuming your boss will actually transport it a lot.

Need a lot power for that so you got 80+ bronze PSU, and Windows 8 is a blazing fast OS that you can just pirate so you can remove those extra 139 dollars.

So if you want you could add another HDD and a 680 but its not worth it, especially when 670 is higher overclocker and lacks just 5 percent performance of power, and lower temps it has OFC.

All that for 2000 dollars, and 2000 dollars is arround 1750 euros so that is actually cheap for this wicked computer.

2000$ is 1500€

BUT, remember he lives in the EU, so you need to add shipping (like 200$ and taxes(21%)+duty(8%) so

2000+200=2200$

2200$+29%=2838$

2838$ in euros is 2060 €

That is more realistic price

Wow.

Thx for all the responses guys. I am looking through it and all the stuff you guys posted.

As for your comment MarthiniL, the PC stays stationary and he does want the best possible performance, solong it doesn't get insanly expensive (who doesn't :P)

The GTX 670 is famed among many yea, although my boss is a bit wary about overclocking, just a personal thing.

I just wonder, how important is a good GPU for these kinda builds?

I was already considering going NVIDIA because of the CUDA's indeed. I was thinking to mabye go for a GTX 700 series although I am not sure if you gona notice the difference between a GTX 670 and one from the 700 series.

Thx again everybody, will take my time to look at all of your builds and advises.

Great builds but not one has a 27" monitor.

He asked for a build not for a monitor (His boss can just use the Mac's screen again ...)
