Synology introduced their new DiskStation DS214play NAS system.

With it's full HD video Transcoding support the 2 Bay NAS system focuses on multimedia streaming.

Synology DS214play features 1080p full HD video transcoding on the fly. Not only it is capable of streaming HD digital TV and movies in their original HD quality but also supports a wide selection of formats, making it easy for users to watch videos via Apple TV, iOS and Android™ handsets as well as computers without the hassle of installing a 3rd party video player.

The DS214play is fitted with 1GB of RAM and a 1,6Ghz intel dualcore CPU (likely CE5335-soc)

The system also has a SD slot, 2x USB 3.0, eSATA and a 1GBE NIC.

Synology claims speeds of 110MB/s read and 100MB/s write in a standard windows environment using RAID 1.

Though Synology did not say what kind of test it was. (sequential or non sequential data)

The DS214play runs at 11.5 watts and 28.74 watts respectively during HDD hibernation and in full operation.

The NAS will be immediately available with a suggested retail price of €260 ($355)

Very interesting, but I have no use for a NAS. This could be the processor.
