That isn't true. CPU will only be transcoding the server to the others and be receiving data from others. Pentiums are great for NAS's and servers due to this.

I know that set up would be fairly under powered and if I wanted mods I would probably need more, kinda like this http://pcpartpicker.com/list/tLRBr7 this should be plenty capable of functioning as a Minecraft server.

I have ran servers, as soon as you go for a load of people, the cpu get taxed a lot, I was running a server on my i5 and it would still lag.

Get a low powered i3, or hell even a pentium remember you need to run an os, whether its linux or windows, and that does take some cpu horse power.

If you are going to do a minecraft server, the best thing to do is to use a linux server without gui. openJDK 8 will be fine to use with minecraft server and if you are going to do 20 users then 4gb of ram will be just fine. also make sure you know how to use screen to launch your minecraft server so you can leave your ssh session and not kill your server.

You don't understand Minecraft, do you? It only uses one core, two if you install Optifine. It's all about single core performance. A Pentium will run better with Minecraft than an i5.

Yep 1 fast core is better than 4 slow cores unless you're running mods.

for minecraft the specs depend on how active and how big. The bigger the world (basically the more stuff/blocks) the more ram you need. The more active players you have the faster the CPU you need. You also need fast memory so the faster the memory the better. If minecraft is not multi threaded you will be looking at a high frequency CPU instead.

I have my own space engineers server but its hosted on AMD piledriver. While its not the best platform for something thats computationally expensive i overclocked the CPU as far as i could and disabled power savings. The game itself runs really smoothly with some hiccups probably because AMD lacks the ram bandwidth that intel has. I run 2 instances and memory usage depends on the world. Empty space with lots of ships only uses a bit of ram while a world with lots of planets and asteroids uses a few GB of ram at start.

So for instances where you need memory bandwidth make sure you do not install it on a virtual platform. Use it on the host OS.

I ran an FTB server on a single core Pentium 4 2.83 Ghz, and 2GB of RAM.

It never lagged, and was only limited by the internet connection.

It had over 20 players sometimes and was easily playable. There was a tiny noticeable difference with lots of people.

You don't understand running servers, do you? Optifine is a client side modification. The server doesn't even know of its existence, however Minecraft doesn't manage cores well, and mainly uses one.

A single fast core is better than multiple slower cores is better for minecraft in general, regardless of if you have mods or not.

On my Tekkit Classic server, just 30 people can easily put a thread of a Xeon E3 1231v3 at 100% usage, and since Minecraft servers only use a single thread, I need to upgrade to something more powerful soon. (Especially with seeing 60-90 players on at the same time most days)

If it's going to just be a vanilla server, then something like a pentium g3258 and 8GB of RAM would be fine, though if you're planning on modded, you might want to look into something with quite a bit better single thread performance like an i7 4790k or i7 6700k.

Also, how's your internet connection? You'll likely need at least 5Mb/s up and down to be able to handle around 20 players.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

I could figure out the Linux part it's the internet connection that would be the problem as I have a fairly slow connection so I could only probably support 15-30 people, but that's all I need as it would be private for friends and people I meet on other servers.
