AMD FX 8320 possible CPU bottleneck

Go to solution Solved by iSuzak,

Can't say for sure but i also have a 970 board and i don't feel like i'm being bottlenecked by my motherboard. So i don't think you should worry about it

Hello!

I currently have a Phenom ІІ x4 925 @ 2800Mhz + Gigabyte 970a ud3 rev 1.0. I am thinking of replacing the cpu with a FX 8320. The question is if i get the fx cpu will it be bottlenecked by the motherboard? In the specsheet on the gigabyte site it says HyperTransport bus = 4800MT/s.

What do you think, should upgrade just the cpu or I would need to change the motherboard too. FYI I do not intend to overlock like crazy.

Thanks in advance!

Ideally you want 8+2 power stages. 4+1 will hold the CPU back to around 4ghz.

I would do some digging to find out what power stages you have,

Piledriver CPU's aren't exactly bottlenecked by 970 mobo's it just makes overclocking kind of unstable and hard to do.

As I've written I do not intend to overclock much (if at all). I am asking about the HyperTransport bus. As for the motherboard it has 8+2 phase power design.

if you aren't overclocking i believe you should be fine with the current board

if you are not OC'ing then the 970 board is fine, just make sure your psu is sufficient for the extra voltage requirement

I have CoolerMaster Silent Pro M 600W. Do you think it wil be enough?

Yea that should be plenty of power. (i'm guessing you dont have a crazy sli/crossfire setup).

Look at my current rig, running a 8350+HD7850 with 500W, so 600W is plenty.

And also, for the Hypertransport bus speed don't worry too much about it because I think I've read it somewhere that no current chips will be throttled by the bus speed. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thank you for the answer. As for the HT bus speed, I am not sure how it is calculated. That is why I decided to post here for help on this matter :)
