I decided to build a PC this year, but it's not easy to make money when you can't legally get a job until like 16 years old. So I was wondering ways I could save money in the build. I've seen a lot of people build a PC, and then just leave the side panel off, to put the components on display. Would this be a good idea? I have my mind set on a windowed case, but if I can just take the side panel off, that would be cool too. So is it a good idea, or could it be harmful to the components?

As mentioned dust and stuff can get into the system very easily but would basically make it somewhat of an open air system then. While not ideal it's not the worst thing ever as long as you don't throw random USB's into the system like Linus you should be good xD

Not a good idea atall. Dust + vapor can damage your build 100%.

I think if your willing to cheap out so much that you'll leave a sidepanel off your build, you should just save up. Something tells me your going to cheap out on a mobo, psu, hard drive etc and I think you'll regret it.

It's not bad for your components and it will not damage them, as long as you make sure to not spill stuff into it. All it means is that you will have to clean out your case more often. Also, generally speaking, cases look pretty shitty with the panel off, especially if they weren't designed with a clear side panel in mind in the first place.

Also, you can find reasonably priced cases with side panels.

When in doubt, re-format.

People has testbeds with no protection, at all just keep the dust off and its fine.

If you want a side panel window get a piece of acrylic or plactic, and make a side panel window, there might be a guide in the case modding section.

No, that's not what happened at all. I have pretty good components picked out. The reason I was asking, was to see if any money could be saved in the process. My PSU is 80+ bronze certified, my mobo has good ratings, my hard drive is from Western Digital, and my CPU is an i5. I'm not cheaping out, I just wanted to know if it was a good idea. I won't regret any of my parts either. I'm not an idiot.
