Upgrading my Rig

kortwotze

So here I am, sitting on quite an old Rig and I am planning on upgrading. I recently got a Gainward Phoenix Golden Sample GTX 1060 6GB, so it is listed in the old rig. I built myself some options and want to hear your opinions on them. :)

Current rig

====

* AMD FX Series FX-4300 with CoolerMaster Hyper 103

* Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3

* Gainward Phoenix Golden Sample GTX 1060 6GB

* 500GB Seagate Desktop HDD

* 4GB (1x 4096MB) HyperX 1333 (4x)

* 550 Watt LC-Power Silent Giant-Green Power Edition Non-Modular

* Fractal Design Define R5

* DVD R/W

Option 1 (~250 €)

====

Small, cheap upgrade for the CPU

* MSI B85-G43

* Core i5 4460

Keep everything else - that should do the trick. But there is more and more is always better, right? :P

Option 2 (~415 €)

====

Heave it up to Skylake

* Gigabyte GA-H170-HD3

* Core i5 6600

* Hyper T4 Cooler

* 16GB G.Skill Value 4 DDR4-2133 (2x 8GB)

Its a bit more expensive, but more future proof I guess. It should not need a new PSU, although I am planning on getting a modular one for better cable management.

Option 3 (~450 €)

====

* Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3P

* Core i5 6600k

* Hyper T4 Cooler

* 16GB G.Skill Value 4 DDR4-2133 (2x 8GB)

This is basically Option 2, but with higher base clock speed, better mainboard and the opportunity to overclock.

The thing is, I am not so very much into OCing, so that is not my killer feature of #3. If there was any, its the better mainboard.

I am very much inclined to option #2 - what do you guys think? I am basically looking for compelling points PRO #1 (less money :D) or compelling PRO #3 (worth spending the extra money)

I would go with option two, but get a 6500 or 6400 to save money.

Edit: PSU is probably junk, buy a new one.

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

Wow, thanks a lot for those replies. :)

1) PSU: Yeah, I´ll get a new one (probably Corsair Modular something anyway, just not now)

2) SSD: Also in the makings, I just cant get myself through to reinstalling windows. Transferring is not an option, because IF I do it, I´ll do it cleanly.

3) Is the only difference really the clockspeed between the 6(4/5/6)00?

Yes, yes it is. The 6500 is the best one for the category, if you want the 6600 you could easily fit a 6600k in the build.

Allright, I´ve checked the prices on my retailer and I am actually thinking of getting the 6500, but a Z170 for the money to keep the option for the bigger CPUs. Thats an insight, I did not have before - thanks a lot!

A bit of topic: It seems that I fell for the marketing of the 6600 non-k. "Uh, the k is expensive, lets get the non-k then. Must sure be good, right?" :D

I am not sure if I will. I mean, the price difference on the Z170 and H170 is not that big. So I´ll get the Z170 mainboard with a non-k 6500 for a start and then see what´s going to happen in the next years.

If you're gonna get a i5-6600 (non k) then you don't need to buy a cooler for it. The stock cooler is fine. If you are just gaming 16GB of ram is not needed, you can add more later if your board has 4 slots.

Thanks for the hints, but I want a silent cooling solution (I am going to replace the fan on the cooler in the OP) and gaming is not my only occupation on this machine. 16GB should work with what I have in mind.
