r9 390 vs rx 480

SomeGreekGuy

I currently have a Sapphire R9 390 OC 8Gb card (with backplate), and I am considering upgrading to a Rx 480. I also currently have an ultrawide 1080p monitor.

Would selling my current graphics card be a wise decision?

This is a sidegrade. RX 480 is a little faster, but you won't even notice the difference. Not worth it. Also the Sapphire Nitro 390 with backplate (rev.2) is arguably the best 390.

Stick with your current card or really upgrade to a faster GPU.

True, but it also has a lower power draw, and it gives me the option to watercool in the future

You can also watercool the 390x, although you don't need it since you have a great model. And please don't watercool a 480, the waterblock is almost half the price of the card Lmao

You can watercool the 390 as well, I don't see the point.

Yes, the power draw is lower, it's not worth justifying switching the card though, unless you planned on buying two of those instantly to Crossfire

Performance is almost the same, so don't upgraded, rather get one more r9 390 and run them in crossfire if your motherboard and power supply support them.

EK doesn't sell full waterblocks, they only sell GPU blocks, and I'm concerned about the other components...

I have an 850 watt, and the motherboard supports it, but my wallet currently cannot support a second r9 390

How much does r9 390 costs you over Rx 480

Here in Greece they are approximately the same price, hence my idea of selling the 390 to buy the 480

Oh, if that's the fact then you are better with your current card, its powerful enough and Rx 480 won't provide you any sort of better performance than your current rig to justify the upgrade, Rx 480 is more power efficient though. Save some money, and look for used r9 390 on sites like eBay etc. You can get a really good deal there, since many gamers are upgrading to current generation Polaris and pascal.

If you don't loose anything then you might as well,  but going from a custom pcb 390 to a reference water cooled rx480 is terrible £/performance. I would suggest you water cool just the cpu and use components so you can add a gpu in later when there is a decent card yo upgrade to within you budget.

I see now,  he was going to sell his current card to buy the rx480 though so his budget for upgrade is not enough to buy a whole other card unless he got an r9 260x 290 cheap to cf with the 390.
