A little bit of syntax for anyone who is interested in helping out a newbie in the world of PC building. I am going to be going off to college next year, and want to have something a little more powerful and functional than the laptop I am currently using. I've recently gotten hands on some money to use for college that i received from a settlement a while ago, and think that this would be a good investment. Because I will be broke in college and a few years after, I won't be able to upgrade my hardware for a while, so I want to get a good machine to that will last for a while. That being said, my budget is pretty fluid to a point, but wouldn't want to spend over $3,000  (US) on parts and a monitor. (again, this can increase a little if need be). It will be mostly used for gaming and schoolwork (with a very small possibly some live streaming down the road). I went with a small form factor just because I am going to be moving around a lot into small living spaces. What I'm needing help on/opinions is obviously, the overall build, but a focus on cooling and RAM just because that sector of hardware is a bit overwhelming with the amount of products in the market and figuring out what exactly would suit my needs the best. Any help at all is very much appreciated!

Here is the link to the parts that I'm considering: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/fLCR4C

2x8GB would be better for dual channel, 16GB will be sufficient for the lifetime of the 6700K, DDR4-3000 is a bit much, and WD Blue drives aren't exactly great (especially at 5400RPM).

This would be a tad better:

Swapped the 1x16GB DDR4-3000 Vengeance LPX for 2x8GB DDR4-2400 Vengeance LPX, the WD Blue 2TB 5400RPM for a WD Black 2TB 7200RPM, and for a total of $1530.95.

I went for 1x16 for ubgradibility and didn't see the 5400RPM... oops.

I understand that, but there is some benefit to dual channel as well (plus 16GB for gaming, schoolwork, and livestreaming is more than enough. He'll probably 'need' to update to the next Intel platform and socket before he needs more RAM). It also saves some money, which could be rolled into the next upgrades or put into other facets of life without sacrificing on the PC.

Looking it over, I'll probably go with this build. I also was trying to decide between The EVGA gpu in the first place. The only question in my mind is the IO on the motherboard. So would switching to the original Asus Z17OI be worth it?

The ASUS board has more USB ports, with 2 being USB 2.0 so you don't need to waste high speed ports on kb/m. It only has HDMI and DisplayPort, which saves a bit of room since you'll have a dGPU, and the orientation of the integrated wifi matches your case. I say in this scenario, the ASUS is the better choice, provided reviews of the ASUS or positive.
