(not sure what section to put this in)

I just got a new house and while we are remodeling I am wiring the house for a network and a small server room.

I wanted to see if I could get any sort of direction on home security.  My neighbor's have several people living there and a couple new cars show up every week, there are little spat's over money every now and then and it has me a little concerned since I have some rather nice things.

I will be building a file server and wanted to look into camera's and anything else anyone can suggest.  I would rather build my own system rather than pay a company to monitor my property.

Is there such a thing as DIY home security? IE: various sensor's that can send you a text if triggered?

I'm going to start googling and looking for the video's linus did on his security system, just thought I'd see if anyone can get me a head start and point me in the right direction.

Audio go Brrrrrr

These cameras: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017Y4CD9U

Weatherproof/Vandalism proof and supports 1080p+ (you can choose lower resolutions, but it's nice to have upward options depending on distance imo).

Powered over Ethernet, so you can run a single wire to them for both data and power. In regards to that....

This PoE Switch: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BP0SSAS

Would recommend. If you put the PoE Switch and the File Server on a UPS, you even have coverage when the power goes out (for a time).

For my pertinent links to guides, reviews, and anything similar, go here, and look under the spoiler labeled such. A brief history of Unix and it's relation to OS X by Builder.

The Smartthings hub works for home security, and can send push notifications of doors/windows opening, as well as text messages and IIRC emails. You can setup all sorts of If This Then That "programs", for instance if the front door is opened while armed an alarm can go off, or all the lights in the house can turn on (if integrated into smartthings), etc.

It gets expensive... but is also extremely nice for every day use if you go all out on it. Amazon Echo + Smartthings is amazing.

You may check with your home insurer, some companies are beginning to give insurance rate discounts if you have a smart home.
