Adding a switch

Go to solution Solved by Electronics Wizardy,

You need to connect the modem directly to the router(most conumser stuff doesnt' support vlans)

The funny thing is that the manged version of that switch does support VLANs.

and many consumer grade routers don't support and this may be a slight pain to setup. And if some one isn't great with networking, digging into vlans isn't something we should do now.

You are saying "another". Is the image of your existing setup or the one you are hoping not to make?

The image is what I planned on setting up.

why not swith the places of the switch and the router. That way you would only have to run one cable

Not pictured is a room at the far end of my home. WiFi reception is awful per my g.f who studies in there.

I have the 5-port version that is managed and it is rather easy to setup since it has a GUI. Kind of why they call them EasySmart switches.

So I am getting the EasySmart version. Is doing what I want to do pretty straight forward in regards to setting up the vlan?

Actually now that I think about it, you would have to have a second cable coming back from the router.

Ports with the cables connecting the modem to the WAN port on one VLAN.

Cable coming from the LAN port on the router going back to switch and all the other ports on another VLAN.

Fuck it. My wiring is janky anyways. Previous home owner has a ethernet cable going through cement to the outside and then he punched it through the siding into the living room. So there's about 5 ft of a ethernet cord with lose slack hanging on the side of my house where you walk in at. Great first impression.

LAN and WAN in one wire requires something that understands vlans on both ends of the connection.

Two different LANs would be possible with connecting to a router that understands sub-interfaces, but since WAN wants its own physical port, you need the switch to split it.

Cheaper way is to run two cables, but who wouldn't want to pay a little extra for elegance and scalability, right?

Another option would be a router that understands VLANs (or an L3 switch), but that'll eat a whole pile of cash so wouldn't recommend it.

Well in a turn of events my setup from the original post works.

7 hours passed and now I have internet for computer's in the basement. Only WiFi devices, Roku, and Steam Link worked.

I ended up having to run a ethernet cord from the router to the switch. Psycho was spot on.
