Are they any good? i can get them from a friend fairly cheap and i know he hasn't fucked with it. i heard the 290 almost keeps up with the 980 in SOME games. is that really true?

if its the stock cooler, it can get quite hot.

if its a non-reference cooler, then it would be better.

I have a after market single MSI r9 270. Fails to keep 60fps in casual 12v12 matches in TF2 maxed out. That's my only knock.

That has nothing to do with a 290...

290s are still solid gpus. if you can handle the noise, reference is fine. I see after market ones in southern california go for 150-200 (and 290xs around the same price)

If its the stock cooler you could try to pull a JayZTwoCents and slather thermal paste all over your GPU core and have it run a few degrees Celsius cooler, though he didn't recommend trying it at home xD

its the asus direct cu edition

never heard of that. benchmarks look fine?

There was an issue with the 300 series where two of the heatpipes didn't make contact with the GPU die. Idk if that issue started with the 200 series.
