Yes. They offer varying levels of performance and longevity, along with the cost of the drive itself.

Does the ssd you get actually matter?

Performance wise, nearly all of the currently shipping 500gb-class/1Tb class SSDs for SATA3 have performance that is such that an end-user probably wouldn't notice the difference in a typical 'consumer' application.

The differences may be with respect to reliability and longevity, as well as warranties and potential customer support/ancillary software packages.

Look for ones with good controllers and take benchmarks with a grain of skepticism. There are plenty of SSD's that can't even saturate the SATA bus even when they state max speeds of 550 MBps.

From what I've seen Samsung takes the cake with random read/write. That to me makes the most difference in a real life application.

Any SSD is fine. The difference say between a Samsung and a Kingston is minuscule when you're talking perception. Say 1 second on one and 1.5  seconds on the other, but I always recommend Samsung SSDs. They seem to be one of the longest lasting and fastest SSDs.

The problem is when you're buying an inferior product that can also give less performance for your money. As mentioned above, warranties are also a thing along with customer service, and also support of the product itself. Some SSD manufacturers will also include their own software to use with the drive(s). How good is that software?

And it depends on where the performance difference is. It may be minuscule when talking about read performance, but write performance could be night and day, which will have a noticeable impact during heavy writes, like installing software and Windows updates.

When I was installing software for someone I know, I gave them a Samsung 840 120GB drive. Compare that to my Intel 520 240GB SSD. I thought the Samsung SSD was extremely slow during Windows updates, due to the heavily nerfed write speeds compared to the Pro version.
