Every night my computer tries to update to windows 10 without my permission even though i have disabled windows updates and gets stuck on 77% for a bit before showing "Failure configuring Windows updates, Reverting changes" It usually goes back to normal after a bit (until it tries to update at night) but now it has been on the failure screen for a few hours..

You can try running the script provided in my signature (disable Windows 7/8 telemetry), as it also removes the Windows 10 downgrade updates for Windows 7, and 8, and prevents them from being searched for by Windows Update. However, since your PC already started the update, I wonder if it will work. You can try it, still, and maybe removing the updates which the Windows 10 downgrade work through will stop it from starting the update process.

I don't know what to do about the black screen... you could try restarting the PC, though that also might screw up your Windows installation, if it isn't already.

If you allow the Windows 10 downgrade to complete, you can revert to your previous Windows installation within 10 days, something like that. So, you could let it complete, then revert, then, hopefully, your PC would be fine, as it was before any of the Windows 10 nonsense. Hopefully.

Asked as if there isn't a litany of commonly-known good reasons why people don't want Windows 10 on their PC, and as if the person doesn't know for themselves which OS they want to be running...

And, seriously, if you aren't interested in helping a person with their issue, why bother posting? It's like you're implying the real issue is that they have their own personal thoughts, needs, and interests.

I'm guessing they started the process back then, but interrupted it somehow, and it's kept trying to complete ever since.

Windows 10 is a shit OS, and so it should be self-explanatory. And, seriously, if you aren't interested in helping a person with their issue, why bother posting?

Do I need to force shut down my computer or do something with safe mode? Because I'm still on the "Failure Windows updates, Reverting changes" screen

If you're able to leave the PC for the night, leave it alone, and hopefully it resolves the matter when it's given enough time to work through whatever it's trying to do. If it resolves the revertion, then, run the script in my signature. That might remove all of the Windows 10 update files from your PC on its own, but I'm unsure about that. If it doesn't, then read this article: http://www.infoworld.com/article/2983777/microsoft-windows/how-to-clean-the-windows-10-crapware-off-your-windows-7-or-81-pc.html

It will tell you where the Windows 10 files are stored on your PC, and how to remove them, so that they don't start installing again. The instructions are, basically:

1. enable Windows to show hidden files and folder, in the folder settings.

2. remove the folder "C:\$Windows.~BT?", using the method described in the above link. Apparently, if you just try to remove the folder that contains the Win 10 setup files, Windows won't let you (though that probably could be changed by changing the folder permissions), and it will also possible re-download them. If you run the script in my signature, then, hopefully, those files won't be re-downloaded.

This application makes removing the Windows 10 update files easy:

It's likely going to take a while along with a few restarts to complete reverting all the changes, so stick with it and it should sort itself out.
