Ok so I'll be explaining each plan I thought of for my next build if not interested skip to the last paragraph.

Original Plan: I thought of this plan upon AMD revealing the RX series, buy a GPU then replace the CPU and Motherboard but after some research I realized that my CPU would bottleneck my "new" GPU and vise versa. My setup would've been an RX 480 with an i5 6600K.

Edited Plan: Saving up to be able to buy both of the original plan's components and Cross fire the GPU so basically get a good Motherboard over clock the 6600K and Crossfore the RX 480s, and guess what rumores of the new Zen architecture start roaming around along the rumores of the RX 490 and Fury.

Current Plan: Wait for the Zen's reveal decide which CPU to get compare the performance of 2 RX 480 with an RX 490 / Fury. Zen CPU + 2x RX 480 or higher performance for price GPU.

I want this PC to be able to last a good time (many years) while maintaining new AAA games at Ultra with a decent frame rate and I want to run decent VR. Any edits and suggestions are welcome, I'll update this post if I get another plan, don't recommend the GTX 1080 I won't buy it (unless it proves to be better than the cards to be revealed), all I want is a CPU GPU and Motherboard any suggestions of a cool case for a reasonable price are welcome. And thanks for your help :D #2long4youEh

I agree, if on 1080p resolution then a 1070 should be enough.

Don't get 480 when you can have 1070. Maybe wait for zen and vega from AMD but for now

So something like this. It's a blue/white theme because I like blue

But if you want to spend bit more because why the fuck not

Then you can have black/blue which is nice

Thanks for the suggestions, we'll see what time brings along. But i don't think a 1070 is a good decision facing a cross fired 480. But for now I'll wait and see

Depending on what you're playing 2 480's might not be better since some games don't scale much with SLI and some games don't support it at all so getting a 1070 might be better.

If you are not in a hurry, definitely wait for Zen and Vega, as well as Kaby Lake.  The next few months will be very interesting and you might regret not waiting.  Plus it gives you more time to save up.  I would suggest going for a more high end card instead of doing crossfire due to the extra heat output, noise, occasional stability and compatibility problems etc.  The new Fury card might be awesome, or just get a 1070.

I'm not in a hurry just thought I'd post this and see what I can gather for example getting a 1070 is better than 2 480s because of the direction SLI and Cross Fire are going I'm definitely waiting for Zen.

and a general question, why did some tech channels on YouTube and some websites promote the 480 cross fire in par with the 1080 and between 1070 and 1080 in most games? While it's just cheaper and better to get a 1070

Edit: What CPU should I get to pair with the 1070 (I'm not buying just to add it to the list above

I'm not sure why some are promoting 480s in CF.  I wouldn't do it.

You'd want a pretty fast CPU to pair with a 1070.  I think a top of the line i5 is a pretty good match for the 1070.  Some have shown that you do miss out on a few fps using the i5 compared to i7 6700k.  I'm using a 1070 with an i5 4690k.  Am I missing out on a few more fps because of my cpu?  probably, but not enough to notice it outside of benchmarks.

get a i7 with that GPU. I have posted this many times now, but I will do it again

10% difference in GTA V when both are OCed and most of the time the i5 just catches up to the i7 when it is OCed to 4.5GHz, who says that you can get that OC? Also that is with maxwell Titan X, not Pascal, so this is basically a 1070. This graph is by digitalfoundry.
You might look at it and think oh that is nothing, well now think about the i7 giving you a more stable FPS, now think about that the i5 when running at 4.5GHz bearly gives the same FPS as a stock 6700k and what if you cannot get your i5 to that, now think about if your CPU goes up to 80-90% or over, then you might get some stuttering. Lastly think about the future.
b41227d61898217535329a3fdc5d06ee.png
and then you have this video that shows that at 1080p locked 60 FPS the 6600k at 4.5GHZ has a really hard time with a 1060. We even see 99% in witcher 3 and if you think it will get better in the furture then you are a fool, it will only get worse, when "next gen" games start hitting us in 2-3 years, then that i5 is fucked harder than it already is. Games are getting more and more CPU demanding.

I agree on the fact that games are getting more CPU demanding and an i5 6600K won't last me long, but 100$ more for more stable fps (and +10fps) isn't worth it much at this time especially with Zen and Kabylake coming soon. And nobody mentioned the 1060 my opinion anything below the 1070 from NVidea is just fucked in performance and pricing. Thanks for the suggestion

That video just shows you how stressed a 6600k at 4.5GHz is with a 1060, those numbers WILL be higher with a 1070. The 100$ price tag might not be worth it for you, but that is not the same as it not worth it.

You also forget the fact that when a CPU gets stressed that much then you start seeing stuttering. A 6600k is already being stressed really hard with a 1060, so unless you only play old games with your 1070 then the 6600k will be a bottleneck in every single new AAA title. Also Kabylake is only 7-8% better than skylake.

I have said what needed to be said it is your money and your choice. I have giving you the facts, so now you decide if you want to keep the i5 or go up to a i7.

Also every single nvidia card pricing is insane, they all went up and the performance is not good enough IMO, no matter what card you show me it will not be good enough for me. Mostly because I know that Pascal is just Maxwell 2.0 Hotfixed with die shrink

I'll watch the video now, and since the 1070 (450$) gets better performance than Crossfire RX 480 (500$) I think it's worth, just don't buy any lower performance card from Nvidea

kek I am getting a 1060 as a stand in card for a year, because my 780ti's broke, so I am using a 7950.

1 high end card is always better than two mid range cards, you loose some performance in some games, but you also don't have the problems of SLI or CF.

Also the 480 CF is generally better than a 1070, in games that support CF atleast.

Remember that a lot of the older videos about the 480 are useless now, there have been a couple of performance updates for the 480 where it has gotten 10% more performance in one of them and some other number in the other one, if you get a 480 like the one Jay has then it beats a 1060 in firestrike.

This gen is just too shit for me to care about high end.

Just get one 1070, it's almost like wanting to buy a 6 core AMD CPU instead of a 4 core intel... you want to go w pure power per threat!

Get a good mobo, Z170 Extreme is a great if you want to do some oc ;)

Thanks for the suggestion, and if I wanna get more power per "threat" I'd overclock the AMD CPU with a stock cooler xD

Update: My budget has been cut down I can't go all out paying over 1000$. New plan is to build a PC that can remain able to play AAA games at decent settings from till 2020, I currently game on 1080p and I dont know if I'll be upgrading to 1440p or 4K. I was thinking about the RX 480, can a single RX 480 run games of 2020 on decent settings with a respectable frame rate and what CPU should I pair with it. For the theme I'm going Blue-(any color that goes along). Water cooling isn't neccesary.

Verdict/TL;DR: A PC that can run AAA games 3/4 years from now on decent framerates probably 1080p.

Questions: Will a single RX 480 do? What CPU should be paired with that GPU(and mobo)?

What I want: A cool looking blue themed PC, if neccesary I can squeze in some money for a water cooler for it to look better.
