I am about to go out with a friend to buy a computer for him paid by work. I am going into Ottawa to go to NCIX and Canada Computers to buy all the parts needed. Below is the parts list that I have made. Does it look like a solid build? Any suggestions?

What is the build being used for? The CPU and GPU are kind of in different leagues, price/performance wise. If hes doing CPU intensive tasks this might make sense. However, if hes gaming it doesn't really.

If this is for gaming, I would say dump the X99 system and get a Z170 system. You can save at least $300 ($150 from the processor and $150 from the motherboard). Use that to get a better video card

EDIT: Never mind about what I said :3

EDIT 2: Still think this is overkill for a work computer. The only thing a i7-6800K might help is if you're compiling something long and complicated. Otherwise an i5 would work just as well.

Gaming is not what this PC is for. It is for work (excel, office, internet, file transfers, FTP, programming, etc.).

Unless he is doing stuff that is very cpu intensive, (like lots of video/audio encoding) then x99 is the right move and even bumpuing up to a better CPU would be good. If he sint doing a lot of video work, and isn't gaming, you can go with a cheaper GPU even. Otherwise, I would just go for a z170 system because the x99 will not make spreadsheeds and facebook perform faster.

When in doubt, re-format.

So you are saying to go with a i7-6700K or i5-6600K instead? I want to keep at least a half decent GPU in because the LG ultrawide is not going to be the only monitor that it hooked up to this setup.

Id say go with the i7 since it is obviously in the budget, but going with an x99 platform would likely be a large waste of money. Skylake cpus handle lots of monitors no problem as long as its just regular applications and no games. Having a decent GPU is never a bad idea, but a z170 system not being used for gaming or graphics work will be just fine without a discrete gpu at all.

When in doubt, re-format.

I could probably go for a much lower GPU.

well yes except a z170 motherboard. I recommend going without a gpu at all at first. If hes not gaming or encoding video, chances are quite good that he wouldn't be able to tell the difference between having one and not.

When in doubt, re-format.

I'd say dump the AIO water cooler for a decent aftermarket air cooler (the problem I have with AIO water coolers is you may get one with air in the system, which causes a sound like an HDD grinding away if it gets stuck in the pump), drop the RAM to 16GB, and get a cheaper video card if gaming isn't a must.

This is a good one, but I cannot recommend anything less than 16 GB ram these days given how cheap it is and how much ram programs eat up nowadays.

When in doubt, re-format.

I can double check on the hardware for you if you would like, but that is about what you need. And yes why not 16 GB of ram. but 32 is just way overkill.

When work gives you no budget, why not go overkill?

Spend the savings on a super nice mouse and keyboard. Make it 3 55" inch screens. Somewhere you will actually notice.

You have a point. Let me discuss this with my friend and see what he thinks. He told me to go overkill, so that is what I did.
