It won't fit the slot if it's not the same as your motherboard. The key and slot aren't in the same place for different generations. To be able to tell if it actually works, you just have to risk it and try it.

Judging by the speed, I'd guess you have DDR3 and judging by the size of this stick you found I'd guess it's DDR2.

if the clocks and speeds are not the same its likely it wont work

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Even if you knew the specs of it we couldn't tell you.there's no other way to know if ram will work unless you try it.

Having said that, don't force it into the slot and you'll be fine. If it doesn't work, take out the stick and clear the cmos and you're good to go

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

The cmos stores settings for the bios. You reset it by taking the big watch battery out of your motherboard for 30 seconds while the power is off

No adapters for ram. If it's not the same gen at least, wouldn't do any good. If it's the same gen but slower speeds, then the system is likely to run slower than if not using it. Unless all stickers were peeled, you should be able to google the part number on the ram to find the specs, if it doesn't already have them printed.

CPU: AMD Sempron 2400+ / MOBO: Abit NF7-S2G / GPU: WinFast A180BT 64MB / RAM: Mushkin DDR333 256MBx2 / HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 120GB

there are adapters !

I just found a SO-DIMM to LONG DIMM adapter and could not believe my eyes for a minute

but adapters from DDR2 to DDR3 or something - nope, never seen any

interestingly though, i can fit a DDR2 DIMM in a DDR3 slot - the computer just won't boot then - shouldn't the notch be in a different spot to prevent this ?

I don't know what you've got there, but DDR2 SDRAM and DDR3 SDRAM don't have the notch in the same place at all:

ok then i REALLY don't know what i got there - maybe a stick of dead or incompatible ram wich I took for a DDR2 but really was DDR3

I went through my ram collection to look for that stick but found something else instead:

RDRAM has a notch in roughly the same spot as DDR3

(sorry for the bad quality but my phone can't do any better)

the notch is slightly wider than the DDR3's and the RDRAM DIMM is a tad shorter overall - so maybe one could manage to fit that into a DDR3 slot
