I'm upgrading from my current system, which has an i7-2600 and a GTX 550ti, as it cannot handle newer games on High or even Medium settings depending on the game. I don't plan on doing any gaming above 1080p and I am not looking to run the most demanding games on Ultra with 60+ fps.

Current build: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/8rQV4C

Any tips or suggestions?

I would suggest a better CPU as the FX6300 is pretty weak. Much more performance for $12 more.

there's nothing wrong with an i7-2600. yeah its not overclockable (its not the k version right?) but thats not your problem. your problem is the 550 Ti. throw a new GPU in there and you'll get at least another year out of it. after that year is up you can buy a new case, CPU, mobo, ram, all that fun stuff, and switch the GPU you bought into that. Get an RX 480 or GTX 1060 and call it a day

Thank you all for the replies!

Unfortunately I have to upgrade my motherboard due to it not supporting a BIOS that is compatible with a GTX 1060 (I found this out the hard way when I bought a GTX 960, so I would assume it would not support a 1060.)

I will try and find a decent motherboard that supports the 1155 socket and work my way from there.

Once again, thank you all!

EDIT: I am also waiting for Cyber Monday and Holiday deals, so time is not an important factor

as for the FX-6300, an i7-2600 will perform better than it. go with a newer i5 if you have to build a new PC.

Have tried to update your BIOS? I see people running some 970 on their Sandy Bridge platform and runs perfectly fine, also ran a RX 460 in a Q6600 powered PC with a crappy mobo so I guess compatibility issues shouldn't be that hard to work around

Getting an FX 6300 is a downgrade. Your i7 is still good. What RAM and hard-drives do you have?

This is the current PC I use: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c02878333

It has 10GB of DDR3-1333Mhz and I have a 1.5TB Sata Hard Drive 5400RPM.

Reuse the hard-drive you currently have for mass storage. 10 GB's of RAM is also enough for most things. Your CPU and motherboard are still good.

Thank you for the help and recommendations, but I'm very certain that the motherboard does not have a BIOS that can support it, I've looked into the issue on the HP forums. If there is a way to update the BIOS to support it please let me know!

EDIT: The latest BIOS it supports is 7.12 Rev.A, which is from February 6th 2012

It has a PCI-e x16 slot which is what the 1080 needs. It has 6 SATA connectors for harddrives and SSD's.
