NVidia announced that the G-Sync DIY kit for currently only for Asus VG248QE (http://www.asus.com/Monitors_Projectors/VG248QE/) will be available for $175. Monitor itself is a 3D, 144Hz TN panel, priced around $300. Isn't that a little bit too much considering you void the warranty of the monitor? Also NVidia CEO said "New monitors won't be much more expensive than non-G-Sync monitors." This doesn't make sense to me, paying $175 for a piece of silicon as well.

It will be on a large variety of monitors in Q1 2014, but now that monitor is the only one that has space for an additional module.

Don't care for G-Synch.

My next build will be AMD GPU(s?) anyways as my 680s are nothing but a nuisance 90% of the time.

And as a few pointed out above:

For 300$ + 175$ ima get an awesome 1440p screen.

[Recently added a 27" Asus PB278Q between my two 24" TN 1080p monitors. The TN ones look like shit now, soooo, no way I'ma buy anything but PLS/IPS/(what ever the 4k thingy is called & what may come in this category) ever again ^^

Must say I agree with you. I'm running a qnix qx2710 and it's amazing. This G-sync doesn't intrest me unless I can have it on my Qnix monitor I will try it out.

Also note that this is a specific DIY kit for a specific monitor, so maybe that's their reason to suck that much money from it. I will personally wait until Q1 next year to see the full offer of these monitors. I hope that 1440p becomes somewhat mainstream because 4K is here and 1080p is getting outadted. If they shrunk it to 24" and priced somewhat reasonably at $350, I'd gladly get one.

Or you could get a gpu that maxes out the refresh rate of the monitor and you get G-sync experience with Vsync.

That will definitly be worth it vs 175 overpriced thingy

What GPU will give you 144FPS in Crysis 3 for example? Not even 2 780s can and that is already over $1000. If you wanted to play CS:GO on it it ould be better to do that. And I agree that paying $500 for a 1080p TN panel is a bit too much and surely only a few fanboys will get it, I am just going to wait for other G-Sync monitors. It's like 4K, early this year it was priced $20 000 and now it's "just" $3500 and I expect a similiar thing with G-Sync.

Do people with 120/144hz monitors even need this? You don't get screen tearing with those monitors as is. Seems like a gimmick!

Screen tearing is caused by frame rate not being the same (or multiple of) as the monitor refresh.  Montitors now are static rate and cannot change on the fly.

Having the monitor switch refresh to the same as the frame rate should get rid of tearing (theoretically, and as long as the full frames are rendered correctly too).

My Rigs (past and present)

Korean IPS is the shit. Overclock it to 120Hz. Problem solved.

1440p, superb imaging and 120Hz.

Can you post a screenshot from blurbusters/testufo? I got my old 120Hz HDTV to accept 120hz but it skipped every other frame.
