Just ordered the new Alienware 15 with the  i7, 1080p panel, 99 Whr battery, 16 gigs of RAM, and an SSD/HDD combo.  The build time is 16-20 BUSINESS days-roughly 3-4 weeks, not counting the shipping.  Is Dell known for overexxagerating the building and shipping times, or will I really have to wait that long?

I'm super hyped and really don't feel like waiting.

First of all, I don't suggest that you get Alienware from now on due to the fact that it's way overpriced, but they do create nice systems. They're just way overpriced. Back to the question, it likely will take a couple weeks to build, as like most PC prebuilds, the parts are made in China and then they're often shipped to Mexico for assembly (that's the usual situation), so expect a couple weeks of waiting. I can see why you're excited though ^^. Have a swell time with your system.

I agree, Alienware was better when it wasn't owned by Dell, but that being said, Alienware wouldn't really be where it is today without Dell.  I've wanted one since I was a kid-such beautiful machines.  I would've gotten an MSI it doesn't have the battery life of the Alienware.

No they really aren't.

Their desktops are way overpriced, sure.  (Minus the Alpha).  But their laptops are actually quite competitively priced.  In fact, out of the four from four major brands, the Alienware was the cheapest in terms of price.

I'd say at least 3/4 that time frame, probably more like half the time frame they gave you.

Most pre-builts are.  (Though that Asus Linus did the review on wasn't bad at all).

No. That's not right at all. If you spec them to the closet you can to each of them Alienware is by far the most expensive. Alienware is almost always the most expensive of the laptops cept MSI sometimes. I wouldn't say they're priced too high though, I think they price it at where people are willing to pay for them.

Except when the prices are actually different, and the Alienware is cheaper.

If it helps at all, I only clicked on the first option for each, I was kinda doing it in a hurry.  But even then, after spec for spec, the Alienware is the exact same price as Sager and Gigabyte (with MSI being the most pricey) or just a little cheaper.

Thanks, that really made me feel better, knowing that the odds are that it won't take that long-still feels like forever away, lol.  I asked my brother, who works for Dell and is a huge Alienware fan, and he said that it is usually 2-3 weeks, just like you said.  He ordered the top of the line one though so his might take a while longer.

Their desktops aren't that great of a value, but man do they look good.

It's literally 150 dollars more expensive spec for spec compared to Sager...how do you even?

To be honest, you pay more for Alienware for several reasons.

1-They produce consistently quality products.  I've never had a problem with any Dell or Alienware system.  My friend just bought a Sager and the motherboard broke within a week.

2-Premium materials.  Steel, LOTS of copper, aluminum, and chrome.  Barely any plastic on their products.  My old ASUS ROG is plastic-ridden, and its not that great.  There's a reason I am getting rid of it.

3-What I call, 'The Dell Experience'.  Dell consistently makes great products, has great tech support, and supplies amazing warranties.  All of those things are worth charging a premium for.  http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/laptop-brand-ratings-Dell is rated as the second best computer manufacturer and the best PC manufacturer.  Not many can claim that title.

Yep, ditched sockets, ditched MUX, ditched MXM, ditched dGPU only, locked bios, locked ec.

Don't get me wrong, they're better than Asus, and on par with MSI, but the hardcore enthusiast market has completely shifted away from Alienware. They're not bad for the average consumer, but in terms of value, Prema-Powered-Clevos have Alienware beat by a mile.

I'm not sure about this, but it doesn't seem like Alienware went with GSync screens. So they're sticking with Optimus. Fuck. SO many issues with Optimus. They don't have a MUX switch like Clevos that allow for switching between GSync and Optimus. Best of both worlds.

I like Alienware, I just feel like they've shifted from the hardcore enthusiast market to the pretend-to-be-enthusiast market.

For you I'm sure you'll have a sick experience, but for us who want value and be able to tinker indepth into the Bios and play with voltages and OC, Alienware is completely out of the picture.

Good for him. At least the RMA process is easier than Asus or Razer. Generally doesn't happen, your friend was unlucky.

I agree. Dell is great. But it's not as good as boutique Clevo shops like LPC or HIDEvolution. \

You pay for the brand name. They're on par in pricing with MSI and Asus is below these guys.

Well the site doesn't have it in your face like you expect, but I found this on the new 17 page. It says on select models, not really specific. I might see if I can get a rep to answer that. Really it is a shame, Alienware's giant battery mixed with optimus could sometime go over 6 hours of normal use. Is there no way to custom mod a MUX switch or see if they could add one? Probably not I know, wishful thinking I guess.

I asked a sales rep how long the Alienware 15 will last with normal use for the upgraded battery.  They said it was designed to last 8 to 10 hours.

Oh, so they quoted the non-GSync models. There's no way it's getting 8-10 hours on GSync.
