I just use lots of programs at once and I would like alot of cores so each runs smoothly

Most desktop applications spend over 90% of their time idle or waiting for i/o. Couple that with the way the o/s handles multi-tasking and one should find that a 4-core hyperthreaded cpu can handle most desktop work smoothly.

Where more cores make a difference is in cpu intensive applications that are highly multi-threaded. Environments with lots of active programs do not necessarily match this pattern. In fact they may do better with higher clocked cores, rather than more, but slower cores.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
