GTX 980ti or GTX 1070?

Looking to upgrade my r9 290. I have a i5-4690k and was wondering if it would bottleneck any of the cards. Also which card should I get?

If you can afford it, the 1070. If you want to be cheap, there's great deals on used 980 Ti cards. The 980 Ti is slower though / uses more power.

 

I myself went for a used 980 Ti because it was $140 less than a 1070 at the time.

 

It should be a good upgrade from a 290 though.

 

It depends on what games you play to see if there's a bottleneck. I have a 2500K with a 980 Ti and in some cases, the 2500K can't feed information to the GPU fast enough (Well, that and I have a lot of programs open so my CPU's usually at 40% usage without gaming...)

Well... The 980 TI and GTX 1070 perform very similarly. If you can get the 980 TI for a marginally better deal, then go for it. If you are only saving a few bucks then go with the GTX 1070 as it is more energy efficient.

I'd go with a 1070 unless you can get a 980 Ti for significantly cheaper. A 1070 will consume less power and produce less heat, but imo that's not all that important. What is important is the way Nvidia has been doing things - a 1070 will very likely last you longer than a 980 Ti. With Nvidia I definitely always prefer going with the latest generation, which is why when faced with the same decision I went for a 1070 instead of a 980 Ti and paid a bit more.

depends on the deal like @Orangeator said. Id personally go for the 1070 because of driver updates, support and features with newer cards. that and power-draw is significantly less with the 1070's pascal architecture as compared to the 980ti's maxwell arch.

leaving aside the power consumption and new tech, my evga 980ti kingpin edition beats the shit out of any 1070... but i don't know how much you will have to pay for a used one though...

I have a h100i cooler on it, but its not overclocked at all. I really dont know how to to be honest and didnt want to mess anything up.

As someone said if you are just gaming get the 1070 but if u plan on doing some rendering or such things then a 980ti with its more cuda cores still performs better than a 1070 but I would only consider a 980ti now if you can get 1 for at least maybe 50 dollars cheaper and I'm sure you can as some stockists will want to get rid of technically what will be considered old stock.
