So ive just moved into a 5 bedroom student house and im the furthest from the front of the house, which is where the modem+router box is.

I have my own TP Link Archer c50 router I can use too, which cannot penetrate the 4+ walls the signal is currently going through + 2 radiators and a metal bed (assuming direct line from router to pc)

my laptop when used at the front of the house 5m from the provided sky router gets 5 megabit down and 1ish up

from my room on the other side of the house it connects and disconnects with 1/2 out of 4 bars strength

Im asking if you guys think its best to invest in a strong wall penetrating router or ask the landlord to fit an ethernet cable outside (I would likely have to provide the cable and cable clips)

If the landlord will alow it the ethernet cable would be best... next up would be powerline.. and then a repeater, in order of what's best IMO.

Plopping something like an AP AC LR (180m range) on the wall in the room closest to the router may do it as well.

I would get a powerline adapter. It generally transfers data through power outlets in your house, which is more convenient than ethernet cable, but little bit slower than direct ethernet connect to router.

These are your two options, apart from running a really long ethernet cable down the hallway to your room.

The Ubiquiti AP's are amazing, and can function as just an AP, letting the router/modem provide DHCP and everything else.

That is the way I'd go, since you can then take it with you when you move again later.

Alternatively, if your TP Link Archer router can run DD-WRT/Tomato firmware, you could turn it into a repeater.

You'd place it between where your room is located and where the router/modem is.
