Hey guys, so I'm on my laptop and tried doing system defrag, I noticedd on the very bottom part of the list called SYSTEM and it is at 66%, I then defragged it several times but it seems glitched.  Just now prior to posting this, I did try it again and it went to 100% fragmented and it won't go back.  Any tips on how I could fix this? Thanks in advance!6254cf5914.png

The partition might be so small that every file as a result is fragmented. I don't know if I would care about it. I also have two partitions on my SSD that I can't optimize which belong to the system.

I see, but I don't recognize having such a small partition though? Or is it so small that it is not showing on "This PC" (Devices and Drivers)?

It's a system partition and not meant to be messed with by users.

That partition is special, it holds just a few files that are needed by the operating system to boot and to fix itself if it's broken.

Basically, the files needed from that partition are copied in memory at boot and never accessed later on, so it really doesn't matter if the files themselves are fragmented or not, because they're only read once at boot and the size of that partition is very small. Basically, it's like saving 0.01 seconds from boot time.

You generally want to defragment files so that when they're read the disk heads don't have to constantly move all over the surface of the platters to find the next chunk of data to read. This helps games load faster for example, because when they load a game level, they generally load several files or parts of files (like game textures, sounds, voices, subtitles) so if the files are continuous, the hard drive loads files faster and game levels load faster.

So my advice would be to ignore that recommendation, because that partition being fragmented won't affect the performance of your system in any way.
