AMD Peepz! (Need some OC Help Please =)

Hey guys i tried doing my first oc on my new rig (Asus Crosshair Z Formula V Mobo, with Fx8350 Cpu) First of all i have a 212 Evo for Cpu cooling, ive done a lot of research on it, and that the 212 evo is a good "Budget" cooler that's much efficient than stock AMD coolers but wasent recommended for overclocking or would be just "Risky" or "Pushing it", and that's something i Avoid to do. I would rather wait until i can purchase a good AIO or a Beefy air cooler like the Noctua D series or something and do it right, or not OC at all. So i had decided not to do any overclocking until i got an Corsair H100i or something of that caliber (Nothing against Air coolers, I know the higher quality ones like the Noctua D series or the Be quiet Dark Rock can do a good job cooling too) Just my personal preference to get an Corsair H100i AIO. Ok well, ive discussed the capabilities of a 212 Evo with some members on this forum and said that the 212 Evo was good enough for some avg OC. Cant recall the exact specs they did but something stable around 4.8ghz!? Well i wanted to see if it could handle it on rig and so entered my Bios for my 1st oc. i did 4.4 (Which I entered 22 in the Cpu Ratio that multiplied it of 200=Giving me a oc of 4.4Mhz) and my voltage at 1.3V. So then I pressed F10 to save and reset. and my Computer would not boot, and would not take me to my desktop. My first question is? -Is this what happens when you OC too much? or the OC was unstable? So my spider senses told me I probably set it too high? So went back into my bios and lowered it to 4.2ghz with same 1.3V and this time my pc restarted fine and took me to my desktop.. If you guys have any experience on oc a AMD cpu can you tell me if this is something normal? Or If i did my increments too high at a time? And is my Voltage too high or too low for 4.2? How should i determine how much Voltage i should set depending on how much i set my cpu overclock? Here's a picture of my current OC from CPU-Z.

increase vcore when it isn't booting to windows (or at all). +0.05v / +0.1v at a time. also make sure vcore is set to manual, not auto 

 

when windows boots up successfully, run a stress test for 30 min to an hour. monitor temps, voltages, everything

wait remember i said my rig wouldnt even boot at 4.4ghz? i had my voltage set to 1.3? Setting it to 1.35 (.5 increase) will give me a steady oc at 4.5 when i couldn't boot at 4.4 with .5 less volts than your recommending? Are you sure sir :/

1.3 vs 1.35 is a big jump. You could keep it at 4.4 since it is a little unstable currently and your trying to fix it. Just letting you know what I would do.

Also, 1.4 is RADIOACTIVE DANGER ZONE for air cooling. Anything under that and you should be good (temps wise)

Idk man i did change my voltage to 1.35 but left it at 4.2. I reenterd my bios and looked at my Cpu Temp. And says its at 46C/114F!!!Ahh wth is going on. I live in Cali and it is hot as hell in my room but that cant be it. Idk but did a gpu benchmark for the heck of it(mark11 and valley) and during the middle of the bench they both crashed! Now i lowered it to 4.1ghz and lowered Voltage to 1.2 lol, ran gpu benchmarks again and didnt crach both went through to the end this time.. idk if im reading the temp right but heres a pic. And do you know of any free CPU benchmark/monitoring soft? And ahhhhhh i dont want to fry my new cpu or mobo. Pray with me..

Imo if anything is buring, this is bad. It should not be because of the cpu OC unless your mobo is real crappy.

yes

I don't know what would be burning, but see if you can locate the smell. I don't think your motherboard would be burning, or the CPU. If the CPU cooler isn't dispelling heat quickly enough, the socket might be melting (I don't remember if that's possible. The plastic might melt at too high of a temperature.)

Everything is ok now it was my neighbor burning doncuments. But for now i think ima wait until i can get Aio cooler before i do any more oc experimenting. My temps are too high =/

46C can be OK depending on ambient temps and what you were doing before going to BIOS. Just control the load temps at all times when stress-testing.

Also, to assess a CPU overclock stability, run CPU stress tests, not GPU, as GPU tests don't load the CPU all that much. I prefer OCCT, but there are other tests as well (OCCT will also monitor temperatures and voltages, but you can use HWmonitor or whatever separately and run other tests, or use AIDA64, etc).

 

Expect all sort of problems (failing to boot, booting but freezing or getting BSOD at some point, failing stress tests) when an overclock fails; just get into BIOS, adjust voltages a notch, and repeat. It's hard to predict the exact voltage your chip will require, ans basically you want to achieve the lowest possible voltage that allows your OC to be stable, so it's mostly trial and error. Your motherboard has a wealth of options that you may need to tweak to get a more stable OC (mostly disabling some features that are known to interfere with OC, and the Digi+ controls), so it is worth checking the manual for what each setting does. We may come back to that once you get your new cooler, although you can practice with small OCs in the meantime just to get familiar with the procedure. But don't do anything without proper monitoring, especially for temperatures: you want to know immediately if it's failing due to high temps.

Did you boot into Windows and stay monitoring the temps with amd overdrive? If the thermal margin is above 0 then it is fine. 0 would mean it is at about 68°C.

 

You being in cali would cause high temps, especially with air cooling. But seriously, if you're freaking out without actually trying a stress test, then yeah...maybe overclocking isn't for you. All you know is that your idle temps are high. 

 

It is your choice, but I'd run a stress test before claiming the temps are too high. Too many things can cause high idle temps for it to matter

Thanks man thats good info. And yes i am new to oc cpu. Ive oc my gpu but i dont think thats fairly as complicated as oc the cpu. And yea i shouldve dl some cpu monitoring programs the only thing i have for the cpu is Cpu Z. But thanks for the recommendations ill mosdef check that out. Im still learning so yea ill learn something from this.

Thanks for the tip man, yea i didnt use any monitoring software what so ever =/ (I have oc my gpu but never touched my cpu) for my first oc all i did was change a bunch of settings in my Asus bios (looked up a how to on youtube) and then tweak the cpu .4 at first and then my volt, and if it booted checked into Cpu z if it OC to what i put in. The thing i triped out about was 114° temp. But as you told me, i didnt know there could be many other factors in making my temps go that high, so thanks. Every mistake is learning experience. I seriously thought oc your cpu was just "turning a knob" so to speak, and if you turned it up to high your cpu/mobo would fry. That kind of was my general thinking of oc. But i know now theres a lot more to it than that, and that you gota understand different functions of the uefi system and thats its like a experiment until you find something stable, right? Well many thanks for the advice again man.

It is a process and certainly not a set it and forget it kind of thing. As far as temps go, like I said the only temps that matter are load temps. Make sure to stress test for at least two hours, keeping an eye on the temps.

 

Having said that, even if your thermal margin drops below zero (meaning it is overheating) it isn't cause to panic. It won't cause any damage so long as you stop the test and allow it to cool down.

 

See if your bios has a fan curve option to help cool the cpu. Most default fan curves cap the fan at 70% to keep noise down.
