Pros/Cons For RX480 and GTX1060

I just want to know what you think the Pros and Cons for each product are.

I already bought an RX480 cause it was cheaper but i want to know which is better.

AND NO FANBOY WARS!

1060 6GB: Faster, more powerful card, runs cooler, lower power draw (120W TDP), more expensive. 3GB version is best avoided.

 

480: Better DX 12 support, better Vulkan support, runs hot, higher power draw (AMD says 150W, Tom's Hardware says 164W), cheaper (in theory), really not all that much better than the cheaper RX 470, which can be overclocked to match it. Go for the 8GB version.

 

That about sums it up, I think. Either one is a good match for a midrange gaming CPU like an i3 or i5.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

AMD is better in terms of overall value (being future proof, being cheaper, having modern/future technologies). NVIDIA is better in terms of efficiency and general performance (except in dx12/vulkan) but has no future.

 

Technically the 7000 series of AMD is still relevant, but the 700 and 900 series of NVIDIA are not.

The 1060 6gb is currently the better card in most games. Current pricing actually puts it at better value for your dollar.

Saying the 480 runs hot is a joke. Compare the 1060 and rx 480 cards using the same cooler. Then comeback and say that again.

AMD have video capture also. Shadowplay is kind of a moot point now.

480 have better hardware compare to 1060 but lack proper software optimization to fully utilize it efficiently. 

 

AMD  driver team slowly but constantly improving the card performance that's why AMD cards have reputation to perform better in the long run compare to their original competitor.

1060 6gb performs better in dx 11, but rx 480 beats gtx 1060 in dx 12.

I bought the 480 for Freesync and love it so far. If course when playing shooters and the like you still want high frame rates, but in games like the Witcher, 40 frames on Freesync feel much smoother than before. 

 

What I dislike is the higher power draw. My ITX system would probably do better with a 1060 concerning the heat output. Which doesn't mean the 480 draws a lot of power. My 290 pulled around 250watts and now I have the same performance for 150watts. For AMD, that is pretty great. 

 

Other than that it is a mixed bag concerning performance. Some titles run better in the 480, others in the 1060, but right now it looks like the new APIs will favor AMD more....which doesn't mean that something else will come around that will make Nvidia catch up again.

 

Personally I was lucky enough to get one of the 4GB 480s for just over 200 bucks and slapped a cheap aftermarket cooler on it. This is better than a 3gb 1060 and it is a lot cheaper than a 6gb 1060 here. So really, there was no other option for me at that price point.

Would a Xeon E3-1231 V3 be to overkill for the RX480

Not really overkill, no. it is a great cpu, but more for workstation use than gaming. But if you do not want to oc and the xeon is around the price of an i5 (which it was for my brother back then)...hell, go for it. A xeon is awesome for any workload.

Im using it not just for gaming.

Well then the xeon is the perfect choice. Get enough RAM and you are golden

It just occurred to me - what if the 1060 only runs cooler because it doesn't have the hardware to DX12? And if it had that hardware it would be at the same TDP as AMD cards? :o

They broke it with GFE 3.0 and the only fix is deleting a update folder they hidden in programdata... ^_^ (play.tv is just as good)

The Nvidia card will cost you extra cash in terms of more expensive monitor if you want G-sync. With AMD you get Freesync/adaptive sync support for free and that is supported by most standard monitors now. And if you play CSGO you want every frame you can get and every pixel perfect. Im hungry for more than 144hz. g-sync. 1ms, whenever they drop that sick puppy. Kinda horny for AMD because of the cheaper monitor but seems to be not quite value enough in Norway at the moment.

That is a good point you get cheaper options for monitors and 2GB more VRAM which will probably help in the future! :P

My thoughts on them are in my article.

Long story short:
GTX1060 wins in almost all DX11 scenario while RX480 is better for DX12 and Vulkan.
Buying RX480+ Freesync monitor is easier on the wallet than G-sync.

What I dislike is the higher power draw. My ITX system would probably do better with a 1060 concerning the heat output. Which doesn't mean the 480 draws a lot of power. My 290 pulled around 250watts and now I have the same performance for 150watts. For AMD, that is pretty great. 

 

Other than that it is a mixed bag concerning performance. Some titles run better in the 480, others in the 1060, but right now it looks like the new APIs will favor AMD more....which doesn't mean that something else will come around that will make Nvidia catch up again.

 

Personally I was lucky enough to get one of the 4GB 480s for just over 200 bucks and slapped a cheap aftermarket cooler on it. This is better than a 3gb 1060 and it is a lot cheaper than a 6gb 1060 here. So really, there was no other option for me at that price point.

It is not available for that price anymore. You can however get a Sapphire Nitro 4GB RX480 for about 230 €.....still decent.
