W7 OEM code - MAK key

I tried to find it by using Showkey, it states I have a MAK key, which companies pay to have thousands of activations.

Now, interestingly enough, I did find the OEM code on the side panel. But this has got me intrigued now.

Now the guy I bought the PC from is an IT guy. He could have easily swapped out the guts and placed them in a case that has the W7 sticker.

How do I go about verifying the W7 OEM code?

I tried downloading then running The Magical Jelly Bean but Malwarebytes says its Maleware.

Yes, its on the tensforums.com tutorial, all fancy and shit. Its actually called The Magical Jelly Bean, KeyFinder.

Showkey just shows BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBBB which is a placeholder for MAK keys.

The guy is an IT person. Who knows the sneaky things he did, he did mention, and I did not pay much attention to, something about what O/S I will be using. So I am thinking its a MAK key.

It says OEM Key: OEM key not present in firmware.

I did get a Product ID, but not the key.

What operating system do you have installed on your computer?

Please open a command prompt as administrator and run the following command:

slmgr /dli

Post the results here, either as a screenshot or by typing it out word-for-word.

Also take a picture of the OEM Sticker on your case and post it here as well.

Make sure to use paint or something to blur out all but the last 5 key numbers.

Leave all other numbers intact.

I'll let you know what's up with your keys and activation status once I have the info.

(Please note that as long as you only provide the last 5 digits of your keys, they're useless for activation purposes.)

This is what it shows.

W7 Professional edition

Volume_MAK channel

Partial Key: yes its there, only 5 digits.

License Status: Lincensed

OK so it reports that you are indeed currently licensed, however, you'd need to attempt a new installation using that key to see if it still activates.

Chances are it won't, as Microsoft would have flagged it for piracy by now if it indeed is a leaked key from an organization.

Your tech guy (whoever built the PC) either knew this during the computer build, or made a buck from it by not selling you a Windows license.

You could try a reinstall using the OEM key on the sticker on your case, assuming it's for the version of Windows you want to reinstall.

Oh good point. Yeah so the sticker on the case is OEM which is different then the MAK.

I didnt clue into that, I just wanted verification that the windows for the system matches to the OEM sticker on the case.

So clone the current drive then attempt install of OEM, to see if it goes with the motherboard.

Very interesting.

So the tech guy selling the system either has a scammed MAK or legit MAK. But couldnt sell the computer, or had a hard time selling the computer without an O/S. Sure he could have installed Linux, but the majority of buyers wouldnt want that.

Yeah yeah, good point.

Originally, before product keys were hard coded into a motherboards BIOS, system builders like dell, HP and the like would have had a pre-activated copy of windows that was installed onto all their computers (there was a massive shitstorm a while ago when computers with pre-installed copies of windows vista suddenly became non genuine) and this key can't be used to install a fresh copy of the OS which is partly why a license key was stuck on the computer to validate the license in a way of speaking.
