Are there ways to determine if a SSD or HDD has been used ever?

Bleedingyamato

I'm mostly interested in asking this about SSDs.

But I said HDDs too in case any possible methods would depend on if it was a SSD or HDD that you were checking.

CrystalDiskInfo

DO keep in mind that some refurbished drives may show as brand new. Other than that, crystaldiskinfo is pretty reliable.

Thank you guys.  I'm curious about this because I almost bid on a SSD on eBay but I had messaged the seller to ask if it was manufacturer sealed and they told me they'd opened the box to look at the 850 EVO but that it had never been used.

I got really suspicious so I didn't bid on it.  I was thinking without it being sealed I can't trust that it hasn't been used.

I wouldnt buy used SSDs. HDD are ok for the most part.

SDDs have a finite number or writes, even if they used it for a month, thats a month less that can be used.

Which is why I told the seller that I couldn't trust that it was unused like they claimed and that I wasn't interested anymore.

Either way I wouldn't buy a used SSD or HDD on eBay.

Though worse than that is I've seen either a few 6700s or 6700Ks on eBay listed as new being sold by a seller who is shown to be in Russia when the item is showing as shipping from California.

If that's not the reddest of red flags idk what is.  No way I'd try bidding on one of those items.
