Yes, no card is capable of saturating PCIe 3.0 x4 in gaming as far as I'm aware.

Hey guys a friend of mine asked me if he should get an Maximus VI Formula or a Maximus VI Extrem. He wants to go Titan Sli (For some reason the gtx 780's are no option to him) and he wanted to know if 16x makes a big difference. I got my Formula because it's so fucking sexy :D but is it worth it to get a Maximus VI Extreme only because of that dual 16x slots?

My Pc: Cpu: I7 4790k @ 4,8 Ghz @1,25 volts, Motherboard: Maximus VII Formula, Graphicscard: 2x Titan X @1,4 at stock voltage (soon to be replaced), Ram: 32 gb Corsair Dominator Platinum 2133 Cl 9, SSD: 2x 850 Pro 1 Tb in Raid 0, 2x Samsung 840 Evo 1 tb raid 1,, PSU: Corsair HXi Series 1000W 80+ Platinum, Case: H440. Quite a bit. It's not about the budget but it's simply that he loves the look of the Formula just like i do. So yeah.

And i forgot to quote. So will it make a difference? Not talking fps (unless it's like over 10%) but Micro stuttering.

It's just bothering me because i have dual 780's and i wanted to know if i lost any performance because of that. It's just that he made me think about it. I bougth that Maximus VI Formula a soon as i saw it.

That's not how it was intended to sound, though I can see it. It's just that LOADS of these build posts are about someone's friend wanting a PC and they have questions but can't be bothered to ask them themselves.

Don't Nvidia cards not run properly in 4x

 

NVIDIA places an artificial restriction that prevents you from enabling SLI on a card in a 4x slot, but there are hacks to disable that restriction.

PCI-E 1.0 offers 250 MB/s per lane.

PCI-E 2.0 offers 500 MB/s per lane.

PCI-E 3.0 has 985 MB/s per lane.

PCI-E 4.0 (unreleased) offers 1969 MB/s per lane.

 

x8 on a 2.0 lane only diminishes performance by 1-2%, well within the margin of error.

 

The Maximus VI Formula has 3x 16 PCI-E 3.0 slots. With 2 titans, they would run at x8/x8, if you put another card in (e.g. sound card) they would run at x8/x4/x4, still should be fine.

The Maximus VI Extreme has 5x 16 PCI-E 3.0 slots. With 4 dual slot cards you could get x8/x16/x8/x8.

 

Either option works by the sounds of it.
