Hi everybody,

I'm going to create a workstation computer for my dad's business.

He will create and render some 3D stuff with the following programs:

Solidworks

CAD

So probably a Quadro or Firepro.

The budget is around 1700/1750 euro so around 2000 dollar (Prices in europe are different then in the US)

This is my current list:

CPU: Intel Core I7 4930K

MOBO: MSI X79A-GD45

GPU: AMD FirePro V4900

HDD: Western Digital Velociraptor 500GB

SSD: Mushkin Chronos SSD 240GB

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB Cas 9 1600mhz (8x4)

PSU: XFX Pro 550W

Optical: LG GH24NS90 Black

Case: Corsair Carbide 400R

Windows: Windows 7 Professional SP1 US

Office: Microsoft Office 2013 Home & Business

Keyboard + Mouse: Logitech MK120

Total: 1775,89 euro

1. Is this a good build?

2. Is the power supply large enough and the GPU strong enough?

3. Can you maybe help me with a better build?

Regards,

It's a beast of a pc but maybe you should swap that velociraptor unless you really need that speed... Power supply should be fine. I'm not an expert of cad and solidworks but i don't think you need that 4930k... let's wait for some expert :)

Where in Europe are you shopping? Europe is quite large and vague..

Velociraptors are very loud and not worth it. You're better off with a seagate barracuda/caviar blue.

What kind of work is your dad doing?

I'll be creating it in the Netherlands while using the site tweakers.net

It's a site where you can choose products and buy them in the cheapest stores.

So no clue about what kind if projects your dad is working on?

So the CPU is more important than the GPU for his purposes?

Depending on what method he's using to render things, the gpu won't even help in rendering time but only with working on the project itself. Final renders are usually done solely by the cpu. A workstation gpu is there so that he can work on bigger scenes without it crashing from a calculation bug.

I think he won't need a CPU cooler cause he won't overclock.

And he wants a faster HDD, i don't know if it's necessary.

And why the asus board? My msi was fine right?

You should be oc'ing. Even if you don't, you'll want an aftermarket cooler. A hex core runs quite hot.

You won't really get a faster hdd without getting a caviar black or velociraptor which aren't worth the money or are too loud imo. It seems like he didn't notice the ssd or he just doesn't know how irrelevant the hdd is (in most cases) when you have a good ssd.

I'm not sure if the Msi mobo comes preloaded with an Ivy-e compatible BIOS. If it isn't you would need a Sandy-e cpu to update it.

I don't feel comfortable with overclocking a computer that i build for my dad for his business.

So the really fast HDD isn't necessary while using a SSD? Will 3D programs slow down while the projects are located on the HDD?

How can i know it's compatible?

Don't mistake me. The barracuda isn't slow at all. It's one of the faster hdd's in the 7200 rpm area under the caviar black.

I haven't heard of bottlenecking issues with the drive with 3d projects. It shouldn't slow down unless your dad is doing something absurd in which case, the gpu, cpu, and ram would probably hold back before the hdd does.

As far as I know, the MSi mobo isn't preloaded with the correct BIOS. It's a total gamble if you go with it.

IMO this motherboard is better as it have way more expansion:http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/350043/asus-p9x79-e-ws.html

It's also quite a lot more expensive..
