Much Cringe, but I'm curious, Minecraft is a cpu whore especially when it comes to modded and even more for servers... Whats worse is its mostly single threaded. What do you think the best CPU would be for servers? I would think the 6700k or 4790k since they have one of the highest single threaded speeds for cpu's but I have heard of others using Xeons ect... Whats your thoughts?

Minecraft isn't as CPU intensive as it used to be. A few years back my company banned the use of Minecraft on our VPS nodes due to the horribly unoptimized Java code was that just maxed out the CPU and ate RAM like crazy but now the only issue we have with them is the DDoS attacks they attract.

Any i5/i7 will do fine for small servers (500 players), just give it heaps of ram (e.g 32/64gb depending on player load). As soon as you start a big server (e.g Hypixel etc) you need a xeon server to run everything. Apart from ram and cpu you need it to run off ssds and have mad internet upload speeds.

xeon is the best for server

I already understood the majority of this :) But the main question is what would be the BEST cpu, hands down for running servers in terms of performance.

You don't need a really strong CPU, but if you want the absolute best, there's the Intel Core i7-6700K and the Intel Core i7-4790K. The 6700K is a bit newer and is slightly faster in multi-threaded workloads partly due to IPC improvements, though the 4790K boosts a little higher on one core, giving it a slight edge in single-threaded workloads.

I'm running one with 2 old a$$ Xeon and I never found it to be bottle-necked by the clock speed. Granted, never had more than 20 players at the same time, but overall CPU usage always seemed to stay fairly low. Are you building a rig just for an MC server? Or is this a personal rig too? I'd say more core/threads are more important when it comes to serving multiple clients than single core speeds, but tbh either of those CPUs will be just fine. How many people are you expecting to get playing at the same time?

Think the point others are making is that your money is better spent elsewhere. You won't notice the difference for all those dollars.

If you run plugins or mods then memory and iops are critical. So getting one of those fancy PCI express Intel SSDs that hit gigabits per second is a better investment.

Couple plugins I ran used mysql and I think I averaged 90gb worth of transactions a day. Killed my poor little ssd within a year :-(. Logblock was the heavy hitter.

if you want a better ssd for the future its not bootable but its fast
