1080p I would say 24" max if that's what you're asking.
Above that is fine of course but you may see some more jaggies or more blur. personal preference really.
And yes it could look nicer if it's smaller or if you're sat further away.

VERY Subjective to each individual...

I've been using a 27" 1080p TN panel for years... I wouldn't call it AWFUL - if it was.... would people use it... no.

I also sit 1-2ft away at MAX in my chair. I also have used my parents 27" 1080p IPS, it's not awful as you put it...

I don't have a problem with it, but its easy to think that many would...

(While 1080p @ 27" is enlarged a lot compared to 24") it isn't THAT bad.

I have not upgraded yet cos Ultrawide resolutions are not fully supported in all games... so why bother.

2560x1440p would be epic, but I'd be looking at way more moneys I can't justify spending when I'm happy enough where I am.

Looking CLOSE, I have to be 5cm away to actually SEE small pixels on the edge of text with a white background.

Who plays 5cm away...

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

subjective,
my phone has a 5.5inch 1080p screen
my desktop has a 23.4inch 1080p screen
my parents prefer a 27inch 1080p screen
my tv is a 32inch 1080p

its about pixel density and what you find comfortable

I have a 24 inch 1080p and it worked well. Eventually I upgraded to a 27 inch with 1440p and that seems like the golden standard to me nowadays. If you have not used a 1440p or 4k monitor... my guess is you won't mind the pixel density.

Also depends on the Quality of the screen i think.
I have 21inch ( Acer LCD ) 1080p and 32inch ( LED TV ) 1080p and on 32" games/movies look amazing  on 32inch as compare to  21inch one.
