Hi,

I am looking to upgrade my PC's memory to a set of DDR4 and have a few questions:

1. What DDR4 memory would you recommend to anyone that asks you.

2. What do you think the best DDR4 memory speed is for gaming e.g. 2133MHz, 266MHz and 3200MHz.

3. What amount of DDR4 memory do you believe is best for gaming e.g. 8GB and 16GB.

Thanks,

naths4

Does your rig support DDR4? You can't just swap DDR3 to DDR4 it won't work.

8GB will be enough, I just recently installed 16GB worth of Crucial Ballistix Sport LT and they do the job

Intel i5 6600k @ 4.5GHz | NZXT Kraken X52 | Asus Maximus VIII Hero | Asus ROG Strix GTX 1070 | 16GB DDR4 Corsair Dominator Platinum @ 3200MHz | CoolerMaster MasterCase 5

1. any brand you can get today is very reliable. just pick the cheapest brand with the capacity you need and the aesthetics you like. if i had to pick though, kingston would be the best.

2. if you're using a non-z170/x99 mobo, you'll only be able to use 2133mhz speed. the best is 3200mhz but performance gains shouldn't be very high.

3. 8gb is enough for gaming, but newer games are using more than 8gb now so i'd recommend 16gb if you can afford it.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

1. Any brand is fine. I personally recommend G.Skill's TridentZ since they use the best memory chips (Samsung B-die) on the market currently.

2. There's going to be some schmuck who's going to say 'faster RAM doesn't do anything'. I can tell you that's wrong. 3200MHz RAM is going to be better than 2133MHz RAM in CPU-intensive scenarios, in the form of boosting minimum and average framerates, and thus reduces stuttering. Of course, the law of diminishing returns starts to take place at around 3000MHz.

3. 8GB is what I consider to be the minimum. If you can get 16GB, get it.

Nobody besides me spots a red flag here? If he said "upgrade to DDR4" than I suppose it's safe to say that he's not using it at the moment, so he's probably using DDR3 which DDR4 is not backwards compatible with, therefore upgrading from DDR3 to DDR4 isn't just a memory upgrade, but it also includes new Skylake CPU and compatible mobo. Did I miss something?

1. i like corsair for aesthetics.

2. 3200MHz seems to be the best bang for your buck, but 2133MHz is just fine for gaming, you're not going to notice much difference at all between them in most situations

3. 8 is the minimum. however that can be potentially limiting. 16GB is reasonably cheap and the way to go.

If your budget makes you choose, its more beneficial to have 16GB @ 2133MHz than it is to have 8GB @ 3200MHz

If you're looking to upgrade to DDR4, that means you're also upgrading at least your motherboard and most likely CPU. Which board are you going with? Just to make sure it is compatible, or you're not buying RAM that can't be utilised fully by the board.

As above. 8-16 GB is enough, for most users, 2133-2400 speed is overall good enough. Higher speed overall cost  a bunch more, but if you can get a higher speed for same/similar  money you can do that. But the margin performance gained is so small, that if this higher speed RAM makes all the difference in your game I suggest you also upgrade something else....

Sorry of the late reply but you guys are correct, right now my PC uses DDR3 and I will be buying a new CPU, Mobo and RAM, thanks for you concerns.

With that system you would need a CPU and motherboard upgrade to use DDR4.

Spending more just to get DDR4 is not worth it, but if you're looking to upgrade to LGA 1151 or LGA 2011-3 anyway, you'll be going with DDR4.

Yeah, I am going to upgrade to Skylake and get a new mobo and set of RAM :)

If you do:

If you go B150 / H170 Board + non-K CPU (no overclocking), then take any 2133 Mhz Ram. Cheapest 2x 8gb Kit.

If you go Z170 Board + i5 6600K / i7 6700K (Overclocking), i would go with around 3000 Mhz 2x 8gb Kit. G Skill RipJaw V are good, or Corsair Vengeance (since they are quite slim).
