Which CPU for older gaming rig

Building an older generation gaming rig so a buddy can get started with PC gaming.  Planning on using old parts I have lying around to give him free.
Mobo will be Asus P5E VM DO and GPU will be a GTX 690.  My two CPU options are:
-Pentium D 930
-Core2 Duo 6600
Which is a better CPU for gaming back in the original Crysis to GTA IV type range and why? The GPU Boss link below shows them pretty evenly matched, surprisingly.  Opinions??

I was surprised to see how similar they actually are.  The dual core technology between Pentium D and Core2 Duo was really that similar?  I just don't know my Intel CPU history very well.  I thought the Pentium D would definitely be "older tech" than the Dore2 Duo.

get ready for a gloriously bottlenecked ride. (as GHG would say). I'd at least try for a core 2 quard, if not early i7s

You would better off selling the 690, and getting a better cpu, and slightly worse gpu, with SLI disabled it is slightly better then a gtx 960.

You would get the same performance if you paired one of those cpus with a gt 730, the bottleneck is that big.
