New GPU Advice

Jay917536

Before you reply: This is not my setup I am simply asking for a friend being I do not know the answer to all specifics so if you have specific questions I may take a second to get back to you being I will need to ask him.

So, I do do know that the 1060 technically is better than the rx480 in most cases but he is running a 2 or 3 monitors (He has not choose to get a 3rd yet but maybe in the near future) setup now being the rx480 with 8gb vram will do better than the 1060 with 6gb vram or will it matter. Also would it it better to get 2 rx480s or 1 1070 being where he lives they are priced the same or within $10 of each other. Also being on what i have seen the rx480 seems to better in the Vulcan supported games and if it becomes widely adopted will it be better in the future being he plans to keep this setup for about 5 years. he mainly plans on doing 1080 or 1440 gaming with high to maxed setting as well as animation and 3d model rendering.

The 1060 is on par with the 480, the advantages have been canceling out.

I would suggest a 1070 if your friend plans to use the three monitors in NVSurround mode. If it'll be just one gaming monitor and the others to put spreadsheets or whatev, then a 480 or 1060 is fine. For 1440p take the 480.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

if he can get the 1070 go for that. the gtx 1070 would be around the same performance as 2 rx 480s and would be way better in games that don't support multigpu.

Crossfire 480s > Single 1070 in games with good scaling.

Okay, Thank you. I will let him know.

Where he is lives power is very cheap, about 7 cents per kw and based on what be currently has which is dual 960's the two rx480s are not a huge increase in power consumption. I will still inform him it uses about half as much power and see if he finds that of value. Thank you for helping out.

I recommend looking at performance in the specific game that he wants to play. There are cases where scaling is great, and there's times where it's not better at all.

Based on the list most seem to scale well. The only one on the list he plays that did not scale well was Hitman which he has not played since he completed the game. Thank you for sharing the link he and i greatly appreciate your help.

As you can see, most of the time it's better than a single 1070, but it will also be a bit more expensive because 8GB 480s are $240
