Is this a big difference?

Hello folks,

I'm planning on upgrading my pc, a new motherboard, GPU, CPU and RAM.

Currently i have a AMD Athlon X4 860K

I want to upgrade to an Intel I5 6500, i checked the specs but there doesnt seem to be that much difference, the clockspeed of the Amd is even better than the i5.

So my question is: is it worth for me to upgrade to an i-5?

(i only do gaming, not editing/rendering)

rough comparison

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-6500-vs-AMD-Athlon-II-X4-860K/3513vs3265

And from what i see there the 6500 is MUCH better :) Its never, faster, more energy efficient and beats the AMD in almost everything.

Core clock speed is not everything :)

Yes, CPU's can vary a bit  quite performance wise despite having similar specs since ipc (instructions per cycle) is not mentioned in specifications normally, I'd suspect a 6500 is more than double an athlon in terms of speed

SNIP

Clock speed is irrelevant when comparing AMD and Intel as they use completely different architecture

it would be like comparing a 3 litre 4 cylinder engine and a 3 litre v8 turbo

Always compare cpus using benchmarks not specs. The specs are "similar" but the i5 destroys the Athlon hands down.
