Hello,

I recently got a new laptop (Dell 15 i7559). Wanted more of an all around notebook w/ ability for some games. I play things like DA:Inquisition, WoW, SC2, Heroes of the Storm, etc. Not trying to run Crysis on ultra.

I am able to play DA:I on mostly  ultra, but at maxed settings I am getting some framerate issues. I dropped the shaders down a little and that helped, and I am running at a steady 30-35fps, but I would really like to bump that up higher. I was thinking that overclocking my system would help me get there.

Specs:

 CPU- Intel Core i5 6300HQ@2.3GHz (Turbo @3.2GHZ)

RAM- 8 GB DDR3L SDRAM

GPU- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4GB GDDR5

not sure what else you would need, let me know what other info you'd like.

Essentially I am looking for help on

1: Seeing if overclocking is possible/going to do what I am asking

and 2: Help on exactly how to do that since I have never done it before.

Thank you very much =)

Most laptops that are cheaper the $1500 don't really have good cooling thus, if you overclock (if you find a way lol) the system would litterally explode and always getting blue screens, plus the only part that you could overclock is only the GPU in really rare occuations, I really recommend you to build it buy a desktop, that would be your best shot l for overclocking for your needs.

hmm yeah I was afraid of that, it doesn't get too hot under load, but it is definitely noticeable.

Then let me ask this, Is there any way, on my current system, that I can achieve the 50+fps that I'm looking for with the maxed graphics?

unfortunately, a desktop just is not an option in my life right now =(

You want to go from 30fps to 50fps just by overclocking? Lol

That won't happen.

You gotta turn some settings down dude.

laptops dont overclock well due to them being designed around certain specific wattage and heat numbers not saying it isnt possible just get a good aftermarket base cooler and only go for a 5-10% overclock and youre probably going to be using the base clock method to do that since I dont think your processor has an unlocked multiplier but be ready for heat and lack of battery power

You can't - the power adapter will likely get overloaded.

You can OC most laptops with good cooling to start with. Put some undervolt on the CPU and do small OC on the GPU and you're solid.

The cooling on the 7559 is exceptional for an $800 notebook. However the 960M is already pushing how far the die can go... it's essentially already an overclocked 860M at best. Also, Dell locks down the BIOS so you cannot flash the GPU to an unlocked version. :S Kinda sucks but I use MSI Afterburner to overclock mine. I managed to get decently high clockspeeds at one point, but I dropped them in favor for GPU stability. In my experience, the 7559 has the potential for amazing performance, but the hardware is limited already by software. The cooling array is fine. Also, the i5 model doesn't pull more than 100w from the wall at highest load. The adapter is a 130w unit.
