So i currently have a 4440K paired with an ASUS STRIX 1080. Obviously im getting bottlenecked out the ass. Im looking to upgrade to a 6700K im wondering if this CPU will give me optimal usage out of my card. Also what would be a good motherboard to be paired with it i was thinking about an ASUS ROG maximus HERO VIII i believe but that is a little expensive in my opinion any ideas. Would I need new RAM as well Im sure DDR4 would be optimal but would the DDR3 that i have work for the meantime? Any suggestions on better CPUS/Motherboards will be much appreciated thank you for all your guys help.

Motherboards Connor really make a performance difference with the skylake CPUs. A 6700k would work fine,  but ddr4 is required. I would get a 6700k and a cheap motherboard, as long as the board has the features you need it will be fine.

Not sure what the 4440k is lol do you mean the i5 4440? If so there shouldn't be much if any bottleneck. Bottleneck means CPU at 100% while GPU is not(many factors cause the gpu to not be at 100%). If you wanted to upgrade to the 6700k you WILL need new RAM and get a motherboard from any of the main manufacturers (asus, gigabyte, MSI, evga etc) that fits in your budget with the features you want and that looks cool. I find it rather hard recommending motherboards without a price range there is too much choice

CPU: Intel i7-4790K @ stock for now --- RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16Gb --- MOBO: Asus Maximus VII Formula --- GPU: MSI Gaming GTX 980ti --- PSU: Corsair AX860i  ---  Storage: Samsung 850 250gb(OS), 3x Western Digital Blue 3tb (one for game and programs, two for media), 3tb WD Green(somewhat backup) and a Crucial M550 120gb SSD (caching games and programs drive)  --- Case: Fractal Define R5 --- Cooler: Corsair H100i with Noctua 2000rpm, Industrial Fans --- OS: Windows 10 --- Monitor: Asus PB298q + AOC l2260SWD --- Mouse: Logitech G502 Spectrum --- Keyboard: Corsair K70 (Cherry MX Red) Red LED's --- Audio: Audio Engine A2's (yes the originals), Sennheiser HD 58x Jubilee Audio-Technica ATH-AD900x, Audio-Technica ATH-M50x, Ant Lion Mod Mic V4 --- Laptop: Dell XPS 9750

Could go for the same motherboard I have which is slightly cheaper: Asus Z170 pro gaming motherboard.
Upgrading to 6700k sounds awesome and will help your graphics and system in general out! But the downside is, you gotta change a lot and buy more stuff :(
But, I'd definitely recommend going for the one you are thinking of because it has so much better reviews, but mine is still pretty good and does its job. And yeah, unfortunately you would need to get new ram (corsair and hyperX are good)

what do you mean wait for zen or kabylake? is that a CPU?

Those are the new AMD and intel cpus, but are still months away from actually launching, and AMD Zen may be pushed back to the middle of next year.

You can still buy haswell i7s if you don't want to spend more money then you have to, the difference between a 4790k, and the 6700k is pretty minimal. If you do go for a skylake cpu ddr3 is not supported.

You will only be able to overclock the 4790k if you have a z87/97 board though.
