So I have this build that I/LTTforum (thnx guys) have been working on. Before hand, I live in New Zealand so everything here is so much more expensive and less "in stock".

Fell free to leave feed back and if you have any suggestions please don't make it break the bank, a good site to use is http://pricespy.co.nz/ to see if NZ has that product.

You have a locked CPU with an Z170 motherboard. If you want to overclock, you need a K CPU. Otherwise, get a H170/B150 board and use the stock cooler.

I'm already aware is possible to do this, but you wont get that much of a performance boost from it. It is better to save money or opt for the slightly more expensive 6600k.

Why?

Overclocking locked Intel CPUs also results in:

1. You lose your iGPU.

2. You lose your CPU core thermal sensors.

3. L1 cache speed is reduced by 75%.

4. You lose C-states.

5. AVX instruction set gets disabled.

People on there are getting 4.3 ghz one guy has 4.5ghz.

Ive seen the 6600k go to 4.7 too.

But I thought the guy is trying to save money cause it allready costs and arm and a leg in New Zealand

Ok so I'm confused, is it bad to overclock a non-k cpu? I know its possible using a BCLK method.

Changing the BCLK causes issues with everything that is dependent upon it. I don't know if this has changed as I've yet to gain any appreciable experience with the new Intel chipsets aside from a couple of builds.

If you get a Z-Series board (Z170) with a locked i5 6500/i7 6700 it is not so bad.  Z170 boards are as low as $80, I think... so that is $30 more.  Although you can OC the CPU's BCLK with a board like this, the most immediate benefit that falls within recommended specs would be the faster RAM (3000MHz+) that Z170 boards support.  The difference between 16GB of 2133MHz RAM and 16GB of 3000MHz/3200MHz RAM is about $10.

So with $40-$45 more for a Z170 board and 3000MHz RAM, you get an upgrade path to a K series CPU and more CPU performance in the form of faster RAM.
