Boot confrontation between HDD and SSD

DonkeyChainsaw

Hi everyone,

So i recently build my own pc and i installed a fresh version of windows 10 on the 240GB SSD. But when i wanted to install the games i noticed that it would take more then 2 weeks to reinstall all of the games. So i decided to move my old HDD from my previous pc to the new one so that i could play my games again without redownloading them. But once i started it up it wouldn't boot anymore. It just gets stuck at the MSI Gaming Motherboard screen. I noticed that this had something to do with the fact that there the oem windows 10 version was still installed on it and since it was a oem it won't boot.

So i had to change the boot order in the uefi. But no matter what i select, the problem keeps occuring. The only way to start it up through the SSD is by smashing the F11 key during startup to get in the boot menu and select my SSD manually.

Does anyone know how to fix this? What steps do i need to follow in the MSI uefi so i can select the 1st boot device properly?

In the first picture the 1st boot option is the Windows boot manager. But i can't select my SSD there. Since it isn't anywhere in the list. But the old HDD which has that oem windows on it is (boot option #7)

My other extra new HDD can't be seen either, what do i need to do?

On the bottom of the picture it also has a option Hard Disk Drive BBS Priorities. In that menu it also has the old HDD as boot option 1 and the SSD as boot option 2. But if i change that it won't boot either. In fact, it goes straight to system recovery if i boot it up. I also tried to remove the old windows files, but that is not allowed by windows.

Yea man. A lot of games have to be redownloaded. GTA 5 takes already takes up a day and a half. Also the entire Assassin's Creed franchise and a lot of other games which use a lot of space. And i don't have the best internet connection (1,1 mbps steam download speed) so...

You've selected the ssd at the top, so it should work. Try messing around in the uefi hard drive bbs properties, not the best advice I know but it might work.

Allright, i will try that. But in the BBS settings i can also disable the drive. But doesn't that mean i disable the drive entirely? Maybe a bit of a noob quiestion, but i don't want to screw this up.

So that means i can't use the disabled drive once it booted up? I was planning on disabling the old HDD and select the SSD as boot option 1.

Yeah you could do that. Try this: only plug in the SATA cable of the drive that has windows then boot.

If i disconnect the old HDD it boots just fine. I just tried it by disabling the old HDD but still no succes. It puts me straight to a unactivated version of windows 10. But it did somehow managed to get my old homescreen back. With a limited resolution. But all my games are suddenly back again. But this is not what i wanted.

Your old HDD is playing games, try putting it to the bottom of the list. If that doesn't work plug in the new hdd to another sata connector

Is that the old one? What does it have that you need?

I did. But somehow it then starts to boot from that drive. I have tried:

- Set it as boot option 4

- Disable it

- Moved around with the sata connectors

But if i hit F11 and go into the boot menu it says that as first option "Windows boot manager <old HDD name>"

I believe that if i could change it in such a way that Windows boot manager would say the ssd's name that it should boot fine. But so far, i don't know how to do that.

Yep the ST1000 is the old one. It's a 1TB drive from seagate. The other new HDD is a Toshiba 2TB. But that one came new out of the box so that one has no windows files on it whatsoever. There is also a 4th drive. Which is a small 2,5" laptop HDD with 320GB but that one has been formatted and is completely empty.
