What laptop should I buy?

Hello everyone,

I'm about to buy a laptop for university, here in Canada, and I cannot make up my mind on what laptop to buy.

My budget is no more then: $1,500 CAD (with out taxes)

I want a laptop that really packs a punch for gaming "on the go" while being slim and "stealthy" at the same time.

I'm somewhat leaning towards this: http://www.ncix.com/detail/asus-rog-gl502vt-i7-6700hq-16g-74-131858.htm

It's on sale right now, and not sure what else to get.

Please suggest laptops to me below. It doesn't have to be from NCIX, it can be from any store that ships to Canada.

Thank you!

Well, in all likely hood, I won't win, so I would like specifics on what exact laptop with links to them (preferably).

For college and bringing it everywhere, I'd recommend something like this: http://www.ncix.com/detail/lenovo-thinkpad-t540p-i7-4600m-42-97689.htm

It is way more rugged than the RoG, and it looks much cleaner and professional and much less stealable. Plus it comes with 3 year warranty, that should keep you covered for most of your college time as well.

What will you be doing with the laptop? Gaming, video editing or any other? No point in getting a laptop designed for gaming if your just gonna chrome. (or maybe you do need a gaming laptop for Chrome lol)

i7-9980x 4.20mhz - 19.8 terraflops of ram - 512mb GENERIC VIDEO_CARD - 20w PSU with hyperthreading.

Well, I did say " for gaming "on the go" while being slim and "stealthy" at the same time" on the forum. So, yes, gaming while doing my work on it.

As a new owner of the GL502VT - you won't be disappointed. It runs decently cool (thanks to the 970M) with only 1 actual hotspot above the keyboard. It's built okay and has about 6 hours of battery.

Well you're asking for something that can't exist. Pick slim or pick gaming. All the super thin gaming laptops have severe throttling and heat issues. In addition I've already told you that's a decent price in Canada. Considering these things the Asus GL502 is one the thinnest laptops that don't have throttling issues. Your other option is to wait for Eurocom to have pascal laptops and look at the price.

I'm not looking for a gaming laptop to run on max settings for games, just looking for a laptop that runs games decently, while being thin at the same time.

Again - heat issues. Ultrabooks are not good at cooling dGPUs

Yes, I understand this, I have a gaming PC at home that I use to play games at max settings, I'm ok with a bit of throttling "on the go".

We literally just told you like 3 times in a row. The GL502VT you listed is about as thin as it gets. And it's a fair price for being into Canada. I told you personally if you could wait Eurocom would be releasing their P650RP6 which is 1inch thick.

Throttling is not okay in a laptop form factor. Reason is if it's thermal throttling, it's too hot. And being in a laptop form factor means things are LITERALLY next to each other. This heat is easily transferable. If you hit thermal limits, heat leakage will damage other components internally such as the battery or mb.

Throttling is not okay in desktops either, but not harmful. I mean look at the Titan XP. It can run MUCH higher but is thermally limited to hell. But it's not harmful because going up to 85-90C on the GPU die in a desktop is fine. Won't touch anything else. Laptops, big no no.

tl;dr the laptop you picked is GOOD. Eurocom P650RP6 is good too with a 1060, but not released yet in Canada. Released everywhere else.

So you are fine with a GPU that runs at 100MHz and performs worse than Intel HD? Okay...

There is no way that that GPU will throttle at a point to a iGPU. It may thratle slightly, but that's it, you can do:

That is the same laptop I use and trust me - it's not an ultrabook. Ultrabooks are usually less 18mm - that is 23.5mm. It's still thinner than most but not an ultrabook. The 970M and 980M versions have good temps - the Pascal versions are hot

Yes, I know it's not a ultra book, I never said it was in this entire thread. I just want something slim, and by that I mean, not super fat. :|
