Should be absolutely fine for format -

it is Defragmenting the SSD that is the big No No...

reorganizes the file structure on the HDD so that fragments of files aren't scattered all over the place.

It makes many writes on your SSD which destroys the lifespan of the device.

Sometimes defrag is turned on by default by windows. When you install a new SSD make sure defrag is disabled.

Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 can identify, if the device is a SSD or HDD and therefor either optimizing or defragmenting, respectively. Older ones will require some configuration indeed.
