unlocked multiplier or not for OC

ramm

Im wondering whats the deal with the unlocked multiplier. Do you need it if you are going to overclock? Or only if you are going to extremely overclock? Because a 6700k cost alot more than a 6700.

unless youre talking about the base clock multiplier. that is for extreme overclocking.

yeah the multiplier is normally on 24 i think and you can set it to 25 or higher when you have a "K" processor, but is it really needed? I mean I can put my i7 950 from 3.07ghz all the way up to, idk a little under 4ghz? 3.7ghz maybe. But it wouldn't be possible because it would get way too hot. What other advantages would a "K" have over a non "K" processor then? Its only if you are gonna add 2ghz or something in an overclock?

thanks for the help

If youre a gamer that plays CPU heavy titles it can give more FPS. If youre a content creator it will Fx render things faster than before. But all this is after some medium to heavy OCing. :)

ok thank you

but what advantage has the "K" over the non-K then exactly? You can overclock even further because you can edit the multiplier and not just the frequency?

But I think in most situations you can overclock a non-K already more than your cooling allows, or am I wrong about this?

you need a special motherboard to overclock (via BLCK multi) a non K chip

For newer chips you can only OC beyond the cooling limit with the K chips.

oh is that new then? I have no idea what my motherboard is but I think its pretty darn old and cheap and I can simply use it to overclock my non-K cpu.

thanks

Ah well I think I have 1st or maybe 2nd gen i7

now I finally get what the K's are for and why you need one if you decide on overclocking in this generation

thanks guys

yeah the K chip is simply the fastest one with very straightforward and officially supported by intel for overclocking and does not ship with a CPU cooler anymore.

It is a bit more expensive though. But benefits are great! :)

Wat.  None k chips can do over 6ghz on Ln2. You just need a z170 board with a none k bios.

Rig Specs:

AMD Threadripper 5990WX@4.8Ghz

Asus Zenith III Extreme

Asrock OC Formula 7970XTX Quadfire

G.Skill Ripheartout X OC 7000Mhz C28 DDR5 4X16GB

These i3 are all locked. Plenty over 6ghz
