I have just built a gaming PC and want a laptop that I can bring to school for my projects and my thesis. I am a graduate student at computer science and studying optimization problems. I need something that I can do complex calculations pretty quickly but I do not know how each cpu would perform or would I go overkill. I want something that will last me a long time. Do not really need a dedicated GPU. 14 inch is the ideal size for me. I am planning to spend about $700. Honestly, It would be the most easier if I won the Razer giveaway but... yeah. Thank you in advance.

The Razer laptops are probably the worst option for you. They are hot, loud and throttle. What you need to do is save up for something like a Dell XPS 13 or Asus UX301. Get an i5 model of either of those.

You usually don't do many things that require a high end CPU for Computer Science degrees for that screen size and price point your only option is a U rated CPU and this is one of the best options however you may need to update the wireless driver by putting the file on a flash drive. https://www.amazon.com/Dell-i7359-6790SLV-13-3-Inch-Touchscreen-Generation/dp/B015P3SH9W/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

You do not need a powerful cpu and probably dont need a dgpu either, and since you mentioned that you need something long lasting I would highly recommend a thinkpad, probably from the business line. The razer ones would probably suck for your use case. Basically I can't think of any use case that they wouldn't suck( but I hope I win it anyway because that's a 2k laptop :p).

Thanks m8

I may seem harsh but it's a poor option in this case. A very poor one indeed

Thanks everyone. I recently noticed that there is the possibility of me running virtual machines with this thing so I am considering a quad core. Are there any good laptops you know with iris pro and a quad core cpu?

Cheapest laptop with a quad-core i5 that is worth a damn is the Dell Inspiron 7559. If you want HT (i7) then you should look at the Lenovo Y700 or Asus GL552VW (the grey metal version)

Kaby Lake will be more expensive and not really worth it - 8% more performance

$700 and it's your tertiary computer? You should be able to get a yoga 900/900s refurb or 2nd hand for around that price now that the 910 are out. Would be a great compliment as a portable workhorse. You definitely don't want something more than 3.5 lbs or so.
