Dumping Asus hero need suggestion

So, the Asus hero is the root cause of GPU coil whine, local computer shop used gigabyte mobo and no coil whine. Psu were tested too to make sure it wasn't that.

 

 

Anyways, I am considering either MSI m7 and the gigabyte gaming 7, any suggestions? Generally I'd pick gigabyte but I heard their bios is awful, haven't hear much any complaints about the msi one.

 

thougts? Suggestions on specific board? I need to be able to oc easily and also need a board that supports 3200oc ram.

I vote for ASRock or Gigabyte! MSI is good I love those and well I heard Biostar have improved, yet I would not pick Biostar first! The only thing I will not vote for at all is ASUS because of their customer support is kinda meh... o3o

I had the Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7. It's good, but the BIOS really sucks, and it doesn't have any proper fan control. I got the MSI Z170A Gaming M7 now, and its been quite a bit better.

Biostar has been garbage the one time I tried them.

 

ASRock is cheap shit, but it gets the job done. Perfect for budget builds, though I wouldn't get any for high-end. My go-to brand is MSI now, and if they don't deliver, ASUS.

I can't return that board, but yes it was the ASUS VIII Hero, excellent board, but the board and the video card have a weird interaction that causes coil whine, I tried 6 top of the line PSU now...including the corsair HXi1000.

 

All other components have been switched and tested except the motherboard. The video card was tested on a separate system with a gigabyte mobo and 0 coil whine was present. I even took my PSU with me to rule out the PSU and no coil whine either.

So I am 100% sure the mobo is the only component that is causing the gpu coil whine.

I take it that there is no coil whine with your M7 when under load playing video games?

I heard good things about the MSI BIOS being very responsive and easy to navigate.

How is the onboard audio?

Nothing audible to me.

 

The audio is nothing special, I've heard better, but its just as good or better than my GB Z170X Gaming 7, that's for sure.

I can personally vouch for the Gigabyte Gaming 7. Had it for almost a year now and I love the thing to death. I too came from a Maximus VIII Hero but had to return it due to onboard audio issues. If I had to choose between a working G7 and Hero, I'd take the G7 every day of the week and twice on Sunday. 

 

I was down to the MSI M7 and the Gigabyte and chose the G7. The MSI bios looked funky to me and not user friendly. Since I would be in the BIOS often the Gigabyte has a cleaner look. I will say though, ASUS has the best BIOS of em all.

 

When it came to features, the Gigabyte offers much more for less money. ASUS has quality products but they lack in features compared to competitors. Basically you're paying more and getting less.

Funny, opposite experience with the GB Z170X Gaming 7. Went from that to an MSI Z170A Gaming M7. The BIOS is much more user friendly.

That's why I said the BIOS sucked. It looks ugly as hell (doesn't really matter, but hey), and the mouse would lag to shit. Even using the keyboard feels... odd. High latency. I could also vouch that the Gigabyte board did have audio issues. When it did work though, it was amazing. Crystal clear, but keep in mind, that was when it worked. Just grab the MSI man, you won't be disappointed.

The bios is fine. The default mouse speed is crap and the cursor moves slowly. Change it manually to 3x and you're good to go.

 

I have surround sound coming from the onboard audio, and let me just say... It's amazing!! Creative Sound Studio on the Gigabyte boards rivals even some of the best sound cards. Switching from ASUS SupremeFX to Creative Sound us night and day. I've never had any audio issues and from day one I've had crystalline clear audio.

 

Either way, I don't think you can go wrong with either. I chose the Gigabyte for color scheme, superior audio, 2nd best BIOS (is subjective person to person), and the crapton features that only ASRock offered at the time I was looking around.

Tough choice, the gigabyte card has many cool features, the MSI does have the upgraded USB stuff for faster connection.

One thing I like about gigabye is that they use the Intel network driver instead of the KillerNIC, I personally prefer Intels because they offer better support for the drives.

Audio is important for me since I do not want to spend extra money on a separate card.

I'll say that the one LED you could control on the GB board didn't have very accurate colours. Green was white-ish, and white was the exact same, so it had a green-ish tint.

 

Honestly, I think you should RMA your current board, unless you've already tried that. The Hero looks like a solid board, other than your issue, if it is common.

I give up on the ASUS Board, I tried 2 brand new boards...I ordered a 2nd one from Amazon and had the same issue so I sent it back.

Well, my recommendation with the MSI stands. I came from the GB Gaming 7. Let us know which you choose. Can't go wrong with either really. They're both motherboards. They get the job done. Where do you live?

Its not the money that is the issue, its the time it takes to reinstall windows, drivers and putting the whole system together is the frustrating part.

The Gigabyte for me gets a thumb down for bios, saw some of the older reviews and noticed their bios resolution is low, and buggy, but its hard to look beyond the amount of features it offers.

The MSI board would match my build because its black and red, so it would match really well. 

Its a hard choice because I do not want to be rebuilding a system over and over again after replacing the motherboard.

Well, on that part both are pretty effortless. Just pop in the disc and express install. Now, those may be a little outdated, but if any have issues (which they shouldn't), you can just remove them and download the latest ones from the site.

No discs here I will just have to download the latest drives..

I also noticed there is no CMOS clear button, so I'd have to manually clear the cmos on the MSI mobo...not a huge deal but can be inconvenient when overclocking and something doesn't come up..

 

I think I'm just going to go with the Gigabyte Mobo, they have a bigger community, and I noticed their updates are not bad...I just hope their onboard audio doesn't make noises...

The default color is red which is what I wanted, so I never had to change it. There's a software you can use to change it if that's what you want. A lot of the software Gigabyte offers on their website I don't use, although there might be something useful to you. 

 

Gigabyte comes with USB 3.1 type A and C FYI.

 

The Intel NIC was another selling point for me as I've read around that Killer is inconsistent and not as stable.

 

I recommend installing the Creative Sound Core software to adjust your audio if need be. It's advanced and will allow you to tone the audio to your needs. If that's not enough, there's a chip on the mobo that you can physically adjust the hardware audio chip, though it requires (a cheap) special tool to take it out. I know it's there but I've never used it but remember seeing it in the manual.

 

If I were you, I would download the Gigabyte mobo manual from their website and get acclimated to it and see what they have to offer.
