Is the g3258 still overclockable?

So I'm building my first gaming rig, right now I'm picking out the parts. By Christmas I hope to have it built and I just decided to pick out my parts now so I can just plan ahead. What I'm planning to build is a budget gaming pc, therefore I had to pick a cheaper processer. Therin lies my problem. I'm stuck between 2 cpus, an amd  athalon 860k, or a intel pentium g3258. I've done my research and I already know that the intel has better preformance per core giving it an edge over the athalon chip. After seeing some benchmarks, the 2 chips are very compareable to each other in preformance (the amd giving an extra 5 fps in some games).however the pentium is unlocked and has "great overclocking potential", so I decided to look into the pentium chip knowing that I could have a good upgrade path since the socket is the same as some high end i5 processers. But I've read in many articles that do to some bios updates and processer updates that the pentium line is not overclockable anymore, however all the sources saying this referenced the g4400 and the g5000 not the g3258. If the g3258 isn't able to oc I think I'll go with the 860k instead, can anybody tell me for sure that the g3258 chip is still overclockable?

I'd take the 860k over a G3258 for gaming since the G3258 will incur pretty bad frame latencies (minimums) in most newer games due to only have two cores (even once overclocked).

So what is your budget for everything, and what is your exact use case?

But to answer your specific question, the G3258 is unlocked by Intel, so it is (and always will be) overclockable. The G4400 was overclockable through the BCLK, which isn't officially allowed by Intel and that's why it is no longer overclockable.

My budget is 350 to 420, I'm planning on getting a 750 ti or a gtx 950, 8g ram, standard psu, budget motherboard only with what I need one pci slot overclockable, standard stuff.

Didn't expect people to reply so fast :)

With only 2 cores some games won't even load even though the g3258 can oc like a mofo 4 cores is really bare minimum for gaming or a better idea just wait for zen to come out supposed to be next month I believe or at least by the by the end of the year yea I'd just wait for zen if your even thinking about getting a new desktop cpu

Ok thanks for the input, but I think I'll go with the g3258. Upon further research the 860k's socket is a little outdated, the 860k is the best processer for that socket. So if I want a better processer I'll have to buy another motherboard. The intel does have solid preformance (40-60 fps) in modern games on medium settings, I also plan to do some video rendering and some media creation on this right to and I know from experience intel is better at that than amd. As long as the g3258 is overclockable I think it will be a good fit for me. And I can always switch out for a better processer when I have a bigger budget. Thanks for the input guys, I'm glad that this is a healthy community. :)

Oh man I completely forgot about zen..., I got a few months till I build anyway so I'll see how zen goes before I make a purchase, thanks.

Yes, the G3258 will have better averages, but worse minimums (which don't show up on average FPS), but will give a very stuttery experience. With a low tier GPU it's not as much of an issue, but the issue is still there. As for rendering, an 860k will outperform a G3258.

Thanks for the input I'll look up some benchmarks for these to be sure of what I'm doing, I'm still a big noob when it comes to building pc's so thank you for all of the inputs :)

I really hope that amd can compete with intel on a consumer level at a good price, I can't wait to see how this goes and who will win

Not even who will "win"  between the two cause that doesn't really matter what matters is they're both competitive so in the end we win :)
