Do I need special Network connectors for this type of ethernet cable?

Member

Can someone help me check if this cable is solid core ethernet? If so, do I need special this type of solid core ethernet connector? Can I just go on Amazon and buy the "regular priced" connected?

Thanks

Yes that looks to be solid core copper cable, but unless your running this in a raceway with lots of other ethernet cables you usually don't require shielded cables. For the keystone jacks as long as they are designed for solid copper wires they will work fine.

I'm planning to install this outside partially in raceway conduits (no water seeping )and also under the soffit.

My area drops to around -25c so shielded cable might help?

Any other cable suitable?

Planning to just have these connect to my switch and my IP cams. Will this work?

If you get shielded cables, you'll need shielded connectors too. There's the metal part that terminates the shielding at both ends.

But this isn't the kind of shielding that helps with cold or other elements. It's for electrical interference. :)

Shielding would mainly help with interference more than anything else but since you will have it inside of conduit it shouldn't have any problems. Those jack look to be ok, the Monoprice ones are also a good choice.

Can I just use regular connectors?

Do you recommend any other ethernet cables for outdoor use (-20C) same price range of 150 CAD.

Meant to rate as informative, wrong button on mobile lol

Oh ok. Do I need to seal the conduit with any caulking ? Any other ethernet cable for outdoor use (-20C temps) price range of ~$150 CAD.

thx

Well for PVC based conduit I assume you will be using the joints will be glued so no moisture can get in easily. As mentioned you can even use regular unshielded cables and connectors but if you really wanted to get the best for exterior use there is gel potted cables that keep moisture out.

I'm just worried about the temperature causing the cable to degrade fast. So any unshielded cable should be fine?

Any specific cable you recommend ? Most of the cables that come in spools are solid right?  Thanks

It wouldn't hurt to have it but doesn't help in terms of temperature variations, so regular unshielded cable would work. If you wanted the best of the best exterior grade ethernet cable in a conduit would be hard to beat.

We've been through this already.

The cable is solid core, i told you that in my post where I suggested it.

The suggested network jacks are also compatible with both solid core and stranded wire cables, one of the reason I chose them - there were cheaper connectors on the same website but I suggested something that I knew for sure is good for solid core wires. You pay more but they're better quality connectors, better than Monoprice or whatever is in 20+ connector bags.

If you're curious see Multicomp on that website, which is Farnell's internal brand, where they pick components from various Chinese and Asian manufacturers, pretty much the same as Monoprice .. they're cheaper but probably won't be as good as what I suggested.

As for the one guy saying you need shielded connectors because the cable is shielded, no, you don't have to. You can just ignore the foil, basically just cut it at the base of the wires, at the point where you untwist them to insert them inside the connector. I suggested that specific shielded cable because it had a very good price.

Even when the shielding is actually used, for exterior use only one side of the cable is typically shielded and grounded (by the switch/rack/whatever), because you don't want to have two different potentials between buildings or whatever. Anyway, this is getting too technical, no point worrying about it.

found some good gel type cable:

Do you think this cable will be fine for (-20C winters)?

most of the cable will be tucked in the soffit and some on the wall.

Even though the cable is UV protected, I might get some conduit and cover the parts on the wall.

thanks for your help :)

Yes that wouldn't be a problem at all just running the wiring along there, as it's exterior grade you could leave it without conduit since it is still partially protected by the structure. The stuff is rated for direct burial after all.
