1. Don't spend $500. Please dear god don't spend $500,

Take that $500, sell your iMac, take the money you would of spent on a GPU and buy a balling PC.

2. It needs TB3

No. The bandwidth isn't the same, I think Thunderbolt is 4 times slower than TB3

Also key word "right now".

What do you mean by that?

its hard to explain but even though its slower its still possible right?

What GPU do you plan on getting with it.

1080

At this point, No. Not worth it.

Why can't you just sell your Mac and Build a PC. You'd end up have a 1080 and a full blown desktop.

Just now, natsuu said:

yeah you do no way a 1080 will fit in that and i doubt the power supply is enough

Get a bigger psu and mod the case.

If you want a premade solution, look at this https://bizon-tech.com/us/bizonbox2-egpu.html/

Id get a gaming pc rather than a imac with a external 1080.

ALso you need a external monitor to play games using the gpu and you need windows to use it.

@natsuu

Any Thunderbolt 3 Devices currently out are not compatible to Mac's Thunderbolt 1 / 2 ports. Currently, there are no adapters that will change that either. Most adapters that are out are for Thunderbolt 1/2 devices to a Thunderbolt 3 computer.

If you really want to upgrade your graphics for your Mac, then buying the AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box is your best bet. Yes, modifications will be needed (which will void the warranty) to be able to fit a GTX 1080 and potentially a new power supply. There are numerous guides over at TechInferno on how to do the modifications and they are actually quite simple.

That being said though, considering building a new low-profile Thunderbolt3 Hackintosh isn't such a bad idea either. That way, your rig will do without a GPU inside, and use a external GPU instead. So if you ever invest in a Thunderbolt3 Laptop, you won't have to worry since you already have an eGPU you can just disconnect from your rig and connect to your laptop.

Not worth it. Especially not with a 1080 since you'll never be able to use it's potential with that setup.

Take the money you had budgeted, sell the Mac, then buy a PC (laptop if that's what you need) and hang onto the extra money.

or

Keep using the Mac as-is for a few years and do a full-upgrade when you can afford it.

Also, a 1080 is not worth it for video editing (and does nothing for audio editing), you'd be much better off with a used Maxwell since you'll see almost no performance difference despite the price.

Having issues with a Corsair AIO? Possible fix here:

Spoiler

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.

  • 1 month later...

Hey, QU. for Linus, Thanks!

I was thinking of using a cable from the MXM port that currently has my nVidia Ge Force GTX 770M, and feed this into the RAZER CORE with a Good New GPU maybe even a couple by adding a Split in my ribbon cable connection.  Will be modding a Very Warm TOSHIBA Qosmio X70-A.

1. I would remove the MXM  card, mind you there is still the on-chip 4600GPU (i7 4700)

2. Dremel a small opening through the side wall where the (Removed Battery, usually sits) and feed this cable through to the Razer Core unit, retro fitt this through the bottom

of the Core unit, and solder to the main board.

3. If I was successful then would look at somehow making it work with an SLI config.

4. My HdMi port is a 4k on my laptop, I would plug this into my 65" 3D TV (LED)

5. This solution will reduce the temperatures in the gaming laptop as there would no longer be a  GPU in the system.

What are you thoughts :) ??  Thanks.  PS. Linus, on-line presence is great........  Been a PC Enthusiast since about 1986, yep, I am an OLDER GAMER.   QLD. Australia
