Budget & Location: $2500 in the midwest USA. Obviously I'd like to spend as little as needed to achieve my aim, but I would be willing to go a bit above if necessary.

Aim: I want to build a rig for VR that will play any VR game at max settings with no framerate dip, no stutter, no artifacting, nothing. As flawless as possible. I’d ALSO like to be able to, at times, have one or two virtual machines running on this, possibly with the UnRaid setup Linus did a video on where I have have my main machine and a docker for a Plex server and a Linux VM as well.

Monitors: I have monitors already.

Peripherals: I have mouse/keyboard already, and I’m not including the VR gear in the price of this build as that has already been purchased (HTC Vive).

Reason for upgrade: current rig is behind the times and not capable of the necessary upgrades for VR (to my knowledge) I might be able to upgrade my video card, but the processor is an unlocked Phenom II X2 545 (making it effectively an X4) with a max stable overclock of 3.2GHz. Mobo is a Crosshair Forumula III.

I’d like to avoid SLI/Crossfire, but if you think it makes sense I’m not totally opposed to it. I’ll buy the parts from wherever the best deals are. I’d also like the power supply to be gold or platinum efficiency if possible.

I have done a few possible builds for this but I can never seem to get my head out of the “must get top tier everything” mentality and it gets crazy expensive. Looking for some fresh eyes to give me perspective, plus it’s been 7 years or so since my last build.

Thanks for reading and for any suggestions!

You can go with two 1070s, or a 1080, or  two 1080s.  The GPU choices are up to you.  A 1070 will do fine for now.
